My wife and I have seen the film twice so far and it is completely mind blowing, The giant sets and locations together with the live singing make this a real Tour de force! Jackman is just amazing and really brings Valjeans character to life. Crowe is surprisingly good, but the star has to be Anne Hathaway, her rendition of I Dreamed a Dream had us all in floods of tears. She brings such a moving performance to the story. The gloominess is lifted by the hilarious antics of Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen as the landlords of the inn. Master of the House indeed ! You have to watch carefully at all the little things that are going on at the same in the tavern scenes. It really is delightfull. Most of the film is shot on location however when the action moves into the studios for the barricade scenes it loses it's grandeur somewhat as the sets seem somewhat cramped after the wider shots. Notheless the film holds together well and It really is a fantastic spectacle! I simply cannot wait for this one to come out on DVD. If you've never seen the show, Make sure you allow 3 uninterupted hours, turn off the phone!, dim the lights, turn up the sound, pour the wine, grab the tissues! and enjoy !!!!!

 Excellent adaptation!

I totally agree with the previous review. The fact that the actors do not have classically trained voices just added to the raw emotion. Hugh Jackman's performance was incredible. Ably supported by Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway and the whole cast. A really memorable evening at the cinema . Well done Tom Hooper.

After watching the West End Show, many times, I was intrigued to see this movie. It is a brilliant movie!. Hugh Jackman's acting is amazing - couldn't fault it, he really showed all the emotion needed for Jean Valjean........... BUT his singing voice is not that good - and after 3rd viewing of movie and listening to album, his voice is 'grating' to say the least, which is a shame as I thought all the other actors did a great job. Although Russell Crowe got some bad press, at least his singing voice is pleasant to listen too. However saying that, it is an amazing film!. Eddie Redmayne was a real surprise his acting and singing was excellent. If you loved this film - read the book.
