"Gobble-gobble...we accept her...one of us," goes the haunting chant of Freaks. Yet it would be decades before this widely banned morality play gained acceptance as a cult masterpiece.

Tod Browning (1931's Dracula) directs this landmark movie in which the true freaks are not the story's sideshow performers, but "normals" who mock and abuse them. Browning, a former circus contortionist, cast real-life sideshow professionals. A living torso who nimbly lights his own cigarette despite having no arms or legs, microcepalics (whom the film calls "pinheads") - they and others play the big-top troupers who inflict a terrible revenge on a trapeze artist who treats them as subhumans. In 1994, Freaks was selected for the National Film Registry's archive of cinematic treasures.

this film is really clever and scary and a real thinker. It takes a while to get into the dark and twistedness of the film but whilst you're waiting for it u can enjoy watching the cast of circus 'freaks' who were played by people with real deformities and the film benefits a lot because of this added realism. Also the ending is a shocker and will stay in your mind for a long time. This film has inspired many future generations including the ramones and even the simpsons

a film every one should watch

I just want to start by saying the dvd i received from play was a rental copy this doesnt bother me but may bother some people so just thought i would warn you

But onto the film

This is a film everyone should watch because it shows how we can be cruel without meaning to be, the film does follow a "freak" called hans (who is just a dwarf)who falls in love with a "normal" woman but she is only with him because she plans to kill him for his inheritance

I dont want to give to much away but lets just say the film has an ending like the 1989 horror great the puppet master

The language is a little hard to follow (i had to watch with subtitles which again doesnt bother me but just another warning)

A great price though at £2.99 and well worth a watch

 Bizarre

For a fim thats almost 80 years old this packs quite a punch. It's fully understandable why it was banned so many years ago.

The tale of midget Hans, member the 'freakshow' of a travelling circus, who falls in love with Cleopatra, a 'normal' trapeze artist. Hans's girlfriend Freida (also a midget) lets slip that he is a very rich man. Cleopatra and her lover, Hercules the strong man, the decide to play along with Hans, in order to steal hans's fortune.

Cleopatra marries Hans and is initially accepted by the other freaks. But when she and Hercules begin to openly ridicule hans, the freaks take matters into their own hands.

I watched this film on Channel 4's 'banned' season a few years ago, I'm not ashamed to admit that the final 10 minutes scared the living daylights out of me! To realise the impact this film made it's interesting to know that it is still banned in many US states and Ireland!

 Nice film.

Good watch and well worth £2.99. Not scary but it is a little freaky! Some amazing characters and the main actor, (the one who falls for the foreign woman) was excellent, I thought he stole the show performance wise. I'd recommend this, whether you like it or not £2.99 is still excellent value.

 A true classic

I have seen this dvd advertised for many years, but never thought to order it. It is a truly moving story of mans inhumanity to man. Wel worth watching and following up on the internet, many of the people featured had very in teresting lives
