One of the Best Pure Action Films Ever Made

| | See all deanlowdon's reviews (465)

Ignore the fact that it has subtitles (there's not exactly much dialogue anyway) as the Raid is one of the best pure action films ever made. I can't even begin to fathom how they shot some of the action sequences and, while it may be perhaps a little too violent for some, this is one movie that really has to be seen to be believed.

One of the best martial arts action films i have seen. I don't class this near the same sort of martial arts as Bruce Lee etc so it is not a comparison to that.

The action in this is second to none and it will take a lot to beat. Think it has definitely made a name for it's self at the top. If you love fighting, guns, violence, and general walk into a room into a mass fight, this is the movie for you. 5*

You'll find little plot development, character arc, tonal shift or emotional punch. The Raid is opting for visceral, hyperkinetic and relentless action. For action and I mean "real brutal" action that's balletically choreographed, blood gushing fight scenes that are exhilarating and a punishing assault on your senses. The reason for this mayhem is simple and brutally effective and manages to include fists, feet, elbows, knees of fury every technique and weapon under the sun. These guys give new meaning to fighting tooth and claw. The action is breath taking in it's violence with a jaw dropping machete fight that managers to out do all other bigger budget action films around. The plot is paper thin and identical to the much bigger budget Dredd 3D but in this case there no such thing as too much of a good thing. This movie isn't remotley subtle but when the bullets are flying (which is most of the time) it's a heart pounding experience with all the credentials to become a cult classic and in the case of Iko Uwais a new martial art star is born.
Don't be put off by being spoken in native Indonesian and having subtitles as if you go to the set up menu you can have the option for English language dubbing that is actually very well done and hardly destracts from the mayhem.
See if you like.......
Die Hard.
Hard Boiled.
The Killer.
Ninja Assassin.
Assault on Precinct 13
Dredd.

If you are familiar with the work of director Gareth Evans and staring actor Iko Uwais from meratau warrior you will love this film! I've been waiting months for the dvd release and was not disappointed. Non-stop action throughout and glad to see a trilogy is planned. There isn't much of a storyline or dialogue but it's surplus to requirements if you love wall to wall action from your films. I have heard that there will be an american remake in english but i doubt i'll watch it, why mess with perfection!

  truly awsome!

Be in no doubt that this has got to be up there amongst the best fight films ever!. No faffing about, this is a full on martial arts extravaganza!. Yes, it has subtitles, but that really shouldnt put you off, its is a simple enough story!. Get it, it is the dogs doodah's!.

  Great, violent action

Did not know what to expect and felt guilty tricking my wife into watching it with me, I need not have worried. Story line is basic, acting is ok but the fight scenes are awesome (and make up 75% of the film). Once it gets going the fights come thick and fast with some stunning choreography. There are some scenes where the entire audience winced in sync as it is VERY violent. If you love action films and don't mind subtitles go and watch you won't be disappointed, even my wife didn't mind it and she is not a fight film fan.

best action/martial arts film of the decade

well this caught me by surprise.a thailand film written and directed by welshman gareth evans.a very strange combo to say the least but this is one of the best action/martial arts film of the decade.in only his second film iko uwais is definately the new tony jaa and steals the show with some breathtaking stunts and fight choreography.the screenplay is top notch and director gareth evans pulls out all the stops.i would describe this film as ong bak meets hard boiled.there are 2 memorable fight scenes where iko uwais takes on a load of men in a warehouse but the end fight scene between the 2 good guys and the baddie is out of this world.its extremely violent and bloody.the good news is the raid 2 is out next year.but if you want to see iko uwais in his first film with similar fighting then watch the marantau warrior which is available on dvd.

  ACTION ACTION AND MORE ACTION

dont go into this expecting big storylines great acting and big budgets..
what you do get is an action packed movie from start to finish..
a special police unit is sent into a block of flats controlled by drug barons and gangsters..floor by floor the police have to get rid of them...
each floor is full of gun fights and martial arts and that basically it..
the good thing is theirs no cgi or wire work so the fighting all looks very convincing and brutal..
all in all if your looking for a action packed movie with some good old fashioned fighting with a so so storyline this will definitley keep you entertained..
p.s. cant wait to see what this looks like on bluray..
