Rescue Dawn is one of the biggest suprises I have seen in ages on DVD. I read the reviews in the papers and certain film magazines, and they all agreed that the film was brilliant, but only one thing put me off, and that was the given certificate 12 rating. How could a realistic P.O.W film have a cert 12 ?
The fact is that this film is still a harrowing account of survival, and although a family friendly 12 it does not skimp on the horrors of war and survival in the jungle. Bale is again outstanding as the downed pilot in the early days of the Vietnam war, and his weight loss throughout the film is shocking. All the support characters are great, but credit should go to director Herzog, as he directs one of the most beautiful films ever, breathing life into the jungle surroundings, so much so that you can almost feel the heat. The film is gripping from the word go and never lets up until the final reel. This is a real underrated classic film.
