New York, 1988: A new breed of narcotics has swept the great city, bringing with it a ferocious crime wave more terrifying than any in recent memory. Outmanned and outgunned by the new criminal order, the police find themselves burying one of their own at the rate of two a month. An all-out war rages, threatening to engulf guilty and innocent alike.

Bobby Green is caught in the crossfire. Manager of a Russian nightclub in Brighton Beach frequented by gangsters like Vadim Nezhinski, Bobby keeps his distance, not wanting to get involved. Bobby harbours a secret though...one that could threaten his and his family's lives. His brother is a police Lieutenant and when all out war between the two factions breaks out, Bobby must choose a side...

 A Shakespearean Film

For those of you already aware of James Gray's work, this film is no surprise: it is gloomy, it is dark, it deals with family, with crime, it takes place in NY, there are good guys, there are bad guys...
Of course, you saw that in zillions of films and tv shows...And yet, Gray makes it new, Gray makes it classic. His film is a modern masterpiece story telling the fate of our petty human lives.
You'll love this story of two brothers fighting, one another, together...
This film is a tragic, dark and illuminating, love story.

 Highly enjoyable cop movie

Joaquin Phoenix is superb in this movie. When is he ever bad? Mark Wahlberg has a fairly understated role in this one, not the hero for a change. Robert Duvall is excellent as always. Agree that the car chase if very exciting. Overall just a few plot conveniences stop it from getting 5 stars. Eve Mendes is very hot in it too!

We Own The Night is one of the most underrated films of the year.
In my opinium it is far superior to the overrated blandness of No Country For Old Men. The film is a brilliant cop thriller, that has the grittiness of the cop thrillers of the 70's like the French Connection.
The all star cast are outstanding and all giving powerhouse performances, but the real star is Joaquin Phoenix giving a complex and multi layed character real life. Not forgetting a massive suprise from Eva Mendez as Phoenix's girlfriend, showing that she is not just a pretty face and can stand her own against the men. Wahlberg gives his best performance since The Departed, and Duvall as always is magnetic. The story is great and the 1988 setting is very accurate. Also the film has a brilliant sountrack, with burst's a Blondie that really stand out. The film is a 15 certificate, but the violence is very real and gritty, with a few great shoot-outs and a stand out car chase, that again reflects the French Connection.
This is a blazing thriller that should not be missed.
OUTSTANDING!
