An excellent cast line up for this film and quite a good story, could have done with a few more action sequences but all in all an enjoyable watch.
'a cracking good tale, headed by some great actors'

two brothers at war, one following family tradition in the 'nypd' ( mark walberg ) the other on the edge of of the law ( played by 'joaquin pheonix )
the latter runs a night club, turning a blind eye to criminal behavior like drug use and dealing.
the father, a police chief ( played by 'robert duvall' ) quite obviously favours the son who is following in his foot-steps, this in itself causes unease between the brothers.
only when the 'nypd' brother become a target of a 'hit-man' does
'bobby' ( joaquin ) begin to put his family ties first.
this is an absorbing film that holds your interest throughout / great cast and a great watch.

The movie drags in parts but for the most part it isn't boring and kept my attention. Although there was not much that really set the movie high above the average crime thriller, it did leave an impact on me at the end. I recommend the movie to those who are looking to pass the time.
Good Cast

A strong cast, a promising storyline, but not enough action. I found this movie a bit too slow in places and I thought that it lacked any real "bite". Not gritty enough to be a crime thriler.
CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED!

Top 10 DVD Reviewer
We Own The Night is one of the most underrated films of the year.
In my opinium it is far superior to the overrated blandness of No Country For Old Men. The film is a brilliant cop thriller, that has the grittiness of the cop thrillers of the 70's like the French Connection.
The all star cast are outstanding and all giving powerhouse performances, but the real star is Joaquin Phoenix giving a complex and multi layed character real life. Not forgetting a massive suprise from Eva Mendez as Phoenix's girlfriend, showing that she is not just a pretty face and can stand her own against the men. Wahlberg gives his best performance since The Departed, and Duvall as always is magnetic. The story is great and the 1988 setting is very accurate. Also the film has a brilliant sountrack, with burst's a Blondie that really stand out. The film is a 15 certificate, but the violence is very real and gritty, with a few great shoot-outs and a stand out car chase, that again reflects the French Connection.
This is a blazing thriller that should not be missed.
OUTSTANDING!
Highly enjoyable cop movie

Joaquin Phoenix is superb in this movie. When is he ever bad? Mark Wahlberg has a fairly understated role in this one, not the hero for a change. Robert Duvall is excellent as always. Agree that the car chase if very exciting. Overall just a few plot conveniences stop it from getting 5 stars. Eve Mendes is very hot in it too!
GOOD FILM THATS WELL WORTH A WATCH

This films reviews are quite mixed and i can see why people may find it boring. Its a little slow but thats the way it supposed to be, dark and moody.
Whalberg and duvall are ok but they dont do a lot to be honest, phoienix is the main man it this film and gives another great performance.
I thought this was a good film with a good plot, not much action and nothing spectauclar just a story film so if you like lots of action then steer clear.
GETS MY VOTE THOUGHT WELL WORTH A WATCH.
underrated thriller

just about every review i read about this film slated it and it never got above two-star territory so i was surprised how good it really is and don't understand why the critics hated it so much.its a gritty thriller with a superb performance by joaquin phoenix and has one of the best car chases i've ever seen in a film,i can't compare it to american gangster as i've yet to see it but if you like tough cop thrillers then give it a go im sure you'll enjoy.
Love It!!!!!!!

Well good film. Good acting by all the actor's, great storyline. Well worth the money. American Gangster in my opinion is better though. Still a great buy.
