Based on the original futuristic story, Paprika was written by the great master of Japanese literature, Yasutaka Tsutsui, in 1993 and is the psychedelic story of a female detective who investigates criminal cases by entering the dreams of her subjects. With music composed by Susuma Hirasawa, who also wrote the soundtrack for KON's award-winning film, Millennium Actress, and equally lauded television series, Paranoia Agent.

In the near future, a revolutionary new psychotherapy treatment called PT has been invented. Through a device called the "DC Mini" it is able to act as a "dream detective" to enter into people's dreams and explore their unconscious thoughts. Before the government can pass a bill authorizing the use of such advanced psychiatric technology, one of the prototypes is stolen. In the wrong hands, the potential misuse of the device could be devastating, allowing the user to completely annihilate a dreamer's personality while they are asleep. Renowned scientist, Dr. Atsuko Chiba, enters the dream world under her exotic alter-ego, Paprika, in an attempt to discover who is behind the plot to undermine the new invention.

Another brilliant film from Director Satoshi Kon

If you've seen Millennium actress and Perfect Blue you'll know what to expect from Satoshi-Sensei with Paprika.
Paprika is a stunning visual treat from this master director, Satoshi creates a rich and fascinating (if slightly disturbing/surreal) story with the usual strong female protagonist seen in his other films.
The story can be a little confusing and while it wants to be a great deep thinking of a film (questioning the perceived nature of reality and dreams) it doesn't totally pull this off.
But for all the storyline flaws the film more than makes up for this in its total originality with the art work and dream sequences. If you liked Satoshi Kons other films you won't be disappointed with this; its got action, the usual Japanese surrealism, and some strangely compelling characters.
I saw this at the cinema and was completely blown away with just the look of the film; the colour, action and detail was just wonderful. I only hope it transfers well to DVD for home viewing, but even so its a must see film for all lovers of anime!

 Hard to fault this one.

This is one of the best looking nu-skool anime features I've seen, with animation on par with Ghost in the Shell 2. The out of sequence editing and rollercoaster pace (which rarely lets up from start to finish) creates a sense of disorientation which drags you into the film world and spits you out at the end with your heart still racing. The musical score is also incredibly beautiful and you will probably need to watch the film a couple of times to truly appreciate the plot. Fans of anime will love this!

This is a great film that I have watched numerous times. The certificate seems a tad high (I personally would of rated it a 12) however it is an anime aimed at Adults and not children. You do have to concentrate as they jump from dream sequence to reality but this just drew me in to the complex story. Satoshi Kon at his best and at this price a bargain.

 Great movie

I have seen it about 5 times. It is really great! May be confusing at times. If you have seen spirited away, donnie darko, the butterfly effect etc.. You might like this movie aswell.

 Average anime film

For the price i definately would say buy this film as is a bargain. I've watched quite a few anime films and series and would have to say this is is the average group. Thought the certificate was maybe a little high as not too much to be gross'd out about etc. Overall quite a nice colourful film which i'm sure you will enjoy
