A great transfer of a great film. Shame us 'collectors' do not get the enitre film though. Part of a car chase is missing, and even more annoying, one or two pieces of dialog are cut/dubbed. Shame...
But still a great film...
The 80s had a simple equation. Vietnam veteran/policeman+hi-tech equipment=action. Streethawk, Airwolf, and Knight Rider all graced the small screen with varied success. However ignoring Blue Thunders spin-off series, Blue Thunder the movie is more serious than we might expect.
The rise of the Vietnam vet as hero really started with First Blood. Men who couldnt be heroes in that war could suddenly find themselves in redeeming situations back in society; or at least explain their suffering. It is easy to dismiss movies such as Blue Thunder; yet it could be argued that they paved the way for Hollywood to reacess the Vietnam war in Platoon, Hamburger Hill, and Full Metal Jacket.
Blue Thunder not only redeems its hero but implies that he is of a more honest stock than the college students who missed the war and ended up running the country whilst he served it.
In his hands the helicopter is a marvel, a wonder of creation and a force for good. In the hands of the people who made it Blue Thunder becomes an Orwellian death machine-a vehicle for the American Thought Police scared of terrorism on home soil.
