If you've seen any of Bong Joon-ho's previous films you'll be familiar with the perculiar brand of dark humour on display here. As a monster movie its as tongue-in-cheek as it should be but it also has more touching side with some quite emotional moments as the oddball family run the gauntlet. All in all a very fun movie with a good mix of comedy, action and tension.
Serves up an intriguing twist on the monster movie genre...

You know this isn't going to be a typical 'monster movie' about 5-10 minutes in when the monster (in this case what amounts to something akin to a mutated tadpole) starts running around IN BROAD DAYLIGHT. No typical half glimpses or hiding in shadows for this beast. But then, as the movie settles down you realise that 'The Host' isn't really a monster movie per se spending far more time with the characters - in this case a family trying to stay alive and rescue a small girl from the creatures clutches. I can undersatnd that this film may disappoint many - movie lovers who have picked it up expecting a typically Hollywood slick CGI drenched monster movie like Godzilla, Jaws etc. But if you know what to expect, a more low-key affair with the typically bizarre Korean sense of humour you'll enjoy' The Host' with it's cast of characters you'll actually care for and an above average monster created by the SFX boffins. A break from the norm then, but a very welcome one...
Great monster movie

Korea is certainly becoming a force to be reckoned with in the film world. This film is reminiscent of the likes of Jaws and Tremors. The creature effects are very good, all looks very realistic. I would have liked to have seen a little more gore, but that's just personal taste. An enjoyable romp, which will appeal to fans of this genre.
Very Enjoyable

Very enjoyable film. I have only recently got into foreign language films and this one really is good. I think I have been missing out and will be off to fond some more. The effects are good and the acting just seems very natural. The charactures are really interesting and the movie does not just hinge around good CGI. Well worth watching and after about 5 mins you forget you are reading subtitles.
