Julie Chrisite, better actress than some of her films.

Julie Christie has had one of those rare careers where she actually improved as an actress. Seeing these four films that stretch over a decade is a good example of this. Darling, for which she was her Oscar, is very dated but Billy Liar (in which she only had a small but crucial role) is still good fun. Both enjoy pretty good transfers to DVD.
The same cannot be said for Far From the Madding Crowd. It is a disgrace. It begins in proper 2.35:1 aspect ratio and then, once the credits are over, it flips out to 16:9 anamorphic. To say that the images have been hacked is an understatement. Thankfully I rented this set before deciding to buy... and the treatment of that one film put me off utterly.
The Go-Between is a terrific story, well acted once again, but it is rather clunky, with an appaling soundtrack which is deployed with all the subtelty of a butcher's cleaver.
Julie Christie is still a wonderful actress though... and sometimes better than the films in which she appeared. The following though, are worthy of her talents McCabe and Mrs. Miller, Don't Look Now, Shampoo, Heat and Dust, Away from Her and Afterglow.
