visuals and performances are almost perfection!

Production design is probably the best I've ever seen. But the film overall is far too depressing and hopeless for second or more viewings. Don't get me wrong, i don't mind depressing films but this one was just beyond limits. Not saying its a bad thing!
One of those movies which are probably good to be watched once and thats it.

  Beautiful

The sets and costumes are beautiful and the visual effects in the film are good.
However, their are alot of historical innacuracies which i could see and im barely an expert on China.
Gong Li amazing.

  Perfection!

This is one of the most beautiful film I have ever seen. Visually it is perfection to the extreme.

The plot is simple, yet exiting to tell the stories of these people captive within, marriage, power and tradition.

Zhang Yimou is unbelievable.... The film is extraordinary!!! Just think what is happening into the royal palace... All movies tell stories about wars, battles but outside of the Royal Walls!!!!

Love story, revenge and a beautiful Gong Li!!!!!!!!!!

BRAVO!!!!!!!

  Bit blonde for my liking

It's a lovely film, but you can turn your brain off as soon as you've found your way back to the sofa. There's no real plot or memorable characters, just lots of luxurious camera work.

And that's fine if you're just wanting to stare at a couple of hours of mindless prettiness, but it's not the sort of film you'll be itching to watch again, or discuss afterwards.

Be warned that the UK dvd comes with *awful* digital restrictions software on it. The disc won't actually play on any player in my house.

this is one of worst film i have ever seen and when i seen the other reviews i felt compelled to tell you the truth about it!
the story is unbelievable boring, i remember seeing the trailer for it and it looked decent enough as the fight seens looked good, but the trailer is more entertaining than the film!

Fantastic looking film, loved the story & performances, big fan of Chow Yun-Fat & it was great to see him play this type of character, nice change. Definately worth the price.

  good but not what expected

The films enjoyable to watch and has some elaborate fight scenes but i didnt really latch on to a solid story line. yes it was directed beautifully and had all the signs of a martial arts film mixing love and fights but in the end it left me with a rather disappointed feeling. This film is watchable and worth 4.99. Whats with the ending though????

this is genuinly a colourfull watch.

this 'martial arts' offering is visually stunning.
with 'pomp and ceromony' backed up with an 'extravagant
set' and 'lavish costumes'
in my opinion this fabulous spectacle eclipses all its previous contempories.
the use of coulours, the musical chants, brilliant.
and do you know what, the story line is probably one of the strongest seen yet for this style of cinema magic, the
fight scenes are also impressive.
all of which, without spoiling the plot, is why i have awarded the film '5 stars'

i really liked this filmm jay chou done great. the drama is very good and the action and battle scene was fantastic.
if you enjoy watching house of flying daggers, hero etc, then get this. this is cheap and is much enjoyable and worth happening with jay chou in!, i gave it 4 stars cause i would have liked abit more action at the start or saw what the battlefront was like( where jai was )
