Sometimes what tears us apart helps us put it back together.

Starring Joan Allen and Kevin Costner, The Upside Of Anger, spans three years of a woman's life following her husband's sudden disappearance.

Terry Wolfmeyer (Allen), an affluent suburban Detroit wife and mother, goes from a paragon of sweetness to a volcano of rage in the wake of her husband's desertion; she thinks he has jetted off to Sweden with his Swedish secretary. Barely holding it together for her four daughters (distinctively played by Alicia Witt, Keri Russell, Erika Christensen, and Evan Rachel Wood), Terry fitfully adjusts while befriending Denny Davies (Costner), a retired baseball player and radio personality up the street who shares her love of the all-day cocktail hour.

Terrific movie - sassy, well acted and funny!

Great movie, with some wonderful acting by a talented cast who seem to really enjoy themselves here. Joan Allen is a revelation, she has real comic ability here and yet her character is no nonsense, sassy and very sexy. Three cheers for 40-something women! Kevin Costner is wonderful here too -sexy, laid back, mischievous. Marvellous chemistry between himself and Ms Allen. The script sparkles with intelligence and wit, it really is a very under-rated movie. As a harrassed newly single mother of 4 adult daughters, she reluctantly gets involved with her next door neighbour, a boozy slacker played wonderfully against type by Costner and it takes off from there. A marvellous twist at the end ensures you'll be pleasantly surprised. Overall, the perfect romcom for a Saturday night with a bottle of wine!

Top 100 Games Reviewer

First off don't do to much research into this film before you watch it. I believe it's best watched without a lot of background knowledge.

So we have Terry, mother of 4 girls, whos just had her husband disappear and leave her with her alone with just her daughters. This film follows a 3 year span of time over many changes in the families life due to their fathers disappearance. I wouldn't take peoples words for it being a comedy, it's a dark comedy and I think only just grabs that name. This film will take from you and hardly give till around the last 30 minutes.

It's a good watch but somewhat leaves you puzzled. It does it's best to make links with the audience but also fails in many ways. I still can't make my mind up about this watch.

I'm not sure if I like or dislike Costners part in this film, I think I'm somewhat biased having just have Robin Hood glued into my head. For fans of American Beauty (not as good as).

I'm beginning to really like Evan Rachel Wood's acting capabilities although in the films I've seen her in she pretty much plays the same role (thirteen).
