I'm technically a bit old for this film, but I borrowed of my 6 year old sister anyway. And to my surprise I really liked it, its a fun and clever story, jokes for adults and the slapstick for kids. The animation of the minimoys is strange but really visually very good. The reason I gave it only 4 stars is because the filmed sections seemed a bit too oversimplified even for kids, the nasty contractor, the eccentric grandfather and dippy but sweet grandmother.

Over all a really fun film, for both adults and children alike.

A good fun film with great CGI. Could have done with less live action and more CGI.

Customer rating: 3 out of 5 stars Dodgy animation combined with decent live-action.

A young boy explores his back garden and ends up in an animated world, in this average film that borrows from the likes of 'Phantom Tollbooth' and 'Pagemaster'. Too much plot and some rather pointless mini-quests vie for attention, but the performances save it. In fact, the actors are so good that after a while you fail to notice how shabby the animation is.

My 8 yr old was completely enchanted by this film. He loved its premise, the adventure, the animation, the acting (recognising Freddie Highmore from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) and the good old fashioned story telling. Me? I've given it four stars and somewhat tempered my sons view because I thought that it was good and worth watching but not quite the five stars my son wanted to give it.

My sons view highlights the films appeal to a young audience. In terms of how it appeals to the older generation, well it does its bit by providing a 'disco' scene featuring songs from the 80's along with jokes that will only be understood by the parents!

Overall, it's good family entertainment. On the whole though it will be probably be better appreciated by the younger members of the family than the parents.
