saw the original when it first came out, and laughed my socks off. decades later, still very chuckle-worthy. although the humour isn`t as slick as todays, it is not as spitefull or mocking as todays humour. Bob Monkhouse and Shirley Eaton were a bit slapstick, but the rest of the cast gave a polished hysterical performance.

Back with where it all started the very first Carry On movie is a charmingly endearing picture which is one that I haven't seen for many years. This 1958 feature provided a starring role for William Hartnell, best associated as the first incarnation of Doctor Who but whom appears here as a convincingly believable Sergeant eager to gain champion platoon status in his last week of duty. Ably supported by Bill Owen's Corporal Copping the new intake are a marvellous collection of characters like Kenneth Connor's hypochondriac Horace Strong, Charles Hawtrey's delicate Peter Golightly and Kenneth Williams' educated elitist James Bailey. Now five decades on from its original film release who could moderator/Carry On film expert Robert Ross possibly offer up as commentary participant. Well I'm delighted to report that the second audio track brings no less than three people whom appeared in this film who are Dora Bryan (who played NAFI lady and Horace's fem fatale Nora), Terence Longdon (whom played privileged officer descendant Miles Heywood charting his path as an enlisted man) and Shirley Eaton (who appears as Mary, the wife of Bob Monkhouse's Charlie Sage character whom is separated on her wedding day when her husband is called up for national service). It's a generally pleasing listening experience although understandably there isn't that great an insightful offering in the film still delighted to have such a varied line up of participants although the two ladies do for the most part shade Terence's contributions by their over ebullience. Rounded out with the usual stills gallery (4 mins) and film trailer (approx 2 mins) it's a pleasing enough title of arguably the landmark debut of the Carry On series.
