Mediocre in every respect, not terrible, but should be a whole lot better. Come on people, surely we've progressed since 'Pride & Prejudice'? Judging by this film's script, perhaps not. Then again, the sort of people who'll want to see this won't notice.

Customer rating: 3 out of 5 stars .. A Movie Of Considerable Charm

MovieMistress | 28/04/2008 | See all MovieMistress' reviews (39) »

As the movie starts we are right in the middle of a wake that was supposed to be a wedding. At the center of the activity is Gray (Jennifer Garner), surrounded by friends as she struggles to cope with the untimely loss of her fiancee, Grady. As her coping mechanisms kick in, she moves in with Grady's roomies Sam and Dennis (Kevin Smith and Sam Jaeger). Also in the mix is Grady's friend Fritz (Timothy Olyphant), in town for the funeral, who hangs around to help clean up. During her grieving process, Gray uncovers a liasion that Grady had that led to a son. So now, on top of dealing with the loss of her fiancee, she has to deal with his infidelity and the possibility of losing her inheritance to a son that no one knew about. Plus, she has a growing attraction to the slimy Fritz. It is a movie that has some fairly deep emotional waters to tread, yet it barely sinks a toe into the waters, and what is there fades relatively quickly from the mind. However still a movie of considerable charm.

Customer rating: 5 out of 5 stars Sad and Funny- Hard To Find In 1 Movie!!!

Despite having a sad undertone this movie is the funniest I have seen for a while. You feel so sorry for Gray, the fact that this poor girl is burying (instead of marrying) her fiance on the day of their wedding and she feels like it's the end of the world. To make it worse she discovers her dead love's best friend getting 'friendly' with one of the caterers at the wake. Then to make ends meet she has to move into her fiance's old room in Dennis and Sam's house, which brings all the memories back (Kevin Smith is Dynamite as Sam!). The guy's do everything they can to cheer Gray (Jennifer Garner on top form) up. Just when things seem to be getting back to normal there is an unexpected arrival. This movie is full of ups and downs and is a steal at £4.99!!!
BEST BIT: When Gray doses herself up with sleeping pills the first night living with her new room mates she falls into a deep sleep on the couch. Dennis attemps to carry Gray to her room and enroute has a debate with Sam, in which Gray ends up being dropped on the floor, and doesn't even wake up!

Customer rating: 3 out of 5 stars Jennifer Garner shines as usual, film does not.

Jennifer Garner is worth £4.99 for a dvd regardless of the films quality. Not since Julia Roberts has an actress had such likability and subtle charisma.

Thats not to say that Catch and Release is a particularly good film, because it's not. I mean, it' has it's moments, and the supporting cast are generally good. But Timothy Olyphant is hard to like.

Despite the beautiful setting of Boulder USA it is hard to see past the films obvious edit jobs - the real product is said to have been nearly three hours - far too long, and you can tell that a lot has been cut out, as the film jumps sometimes inexplicably between locations and scenes.

Catch and Release is a case of a great cast with not great direction or scripting. I didn't think it was an awful movie, but certainly if Jennifer Garner wasn't involved I wouldn't look twice.

This film was a no brainer, you can just sit back relax and enjoy after a stressful day. That doesn't make it a bad film, I loved it, even if it is a typical romance it is humourous; you will enjoy it and i would recommend it!

Jenifer Garner has fitted well into the RomCom role, after '13 going on 30', and now 'Catch and Release', it is a welcome fresh change to sydney bristow in 'ALIAS', or Elektra in 'Daredevil' and 'Elektra'.
Great movie to watch if you need something to cheer you up without thinking too much.
