It's no Mononoke , but worth watching for sure with an usual plot for even a japanese anime, it doesnt rank high but i guess i was in a good mood when i sat down and watched this film and it puts me in a good one every time i watch it.

Customer rating: 4 out of 5 stars Worthy to be credited with the Ghibli name.

If you're into Anime, and you like Ghibli, then there's no reason you won't like this offering from Goro Miyazaki... Artistically brilliant with a decent plot... Nothing to NOT like really... Can't be compared to the likes of Princess Mononoke, but should be credited as a stand alone first outing from an up and coming talent. Loved it.

Being a fan of pretty much every Studio Ghibli movie to date this was a instant buy for me, as usual it did not disapoint.
Though it is a huge leap from other Studio Ghibli movies but thats mostly due to the fact it's based off a novel rather then a original story, so already it's like they've had to keep the story locked in a room.
Around about halfway through the film there is a song that is incredibly touching and was brilliantly drawn too.
Also i would like to point out that the English dub like all the other Studio Ghibli movies was utterly fantastic.

Personally I thought this was a great movie if you watch it for what it is. It is merely "inspired by" the books, it doesn't necessarily portray them. I find it saddening that people have to compare this debut from Goro Miyazaki to his fathers work. Goro is not (and probably doesn't want to be) just like his father and therefor his work will probably always be different. We must also bear in mind that this is just a debut and Goro is nowhere near as experienced as his father. Like I said, try to watch the film for what it is and try not to compare it to anything else, and then make your judgements.

I found film this ok. it wasnt the best studio Ghibli film and i dont think that Goro Miyazaki can fill his fathers shoes, as his films are far better!

i'll admit that it was heartwarming but it didnt have the best plot but i did enjoy it.But comparing it to his fathers films it is disappointing.

Customer rating: 4 out of 5 stars Not Perfect, but definitely deserves a look!

My review is an encompassment of what I think in relation to the film and to what I have read in other "Tales From Earthsea" reviews.

1. A fantastic film to watch. For regular Studio Ghibli watchers, this is not disappointing and I think we have much to look forward to from Goro Miyazaki. Although I didn't enjoy it as much as say Howl's Moving Castle or Princess Mononoke, I would definitely put it somewhere in the top 5 Studio Ghibli films.

2. I have not read the book, so I cannot judge how close the film was to the novel. However, from looking at other reviews, it appears that the film was not as loyal as it could have been. I know how irritating this can be due to the Harry Potter films, but I think it is important to step back from the novel, and think of the film by itself. It does have a fascinating story, with my only complaint being that dragons did not feature as heavily as I would have hoped!

3. Like most of the Studio Ghibli films, things are left unanswered which can be annoying for eager fans, and the rather abrupt finish can increase your feeling that there is still a little more to tell. Having said that, we are left with a satisfying conclusion to the main plot.

In summary: An essential for Studio Ghibli lovers. Perhaps a little disappointing for fans of the book, but all in all, a good film that I would definitely recommend.

The film does no justice, and bears little resemblance, to any of the Earthsea books by Ursula K. Le Guin even if Studio Ghibli have worked their magnificent animation skills on it. 2 out of 10, could do a lot better. In my opinion if you wish to see Studio Ghibli at its best in an inventive, if highly improbable, storyline then I can strongly recommend "Porco Rosso"

Customer rating: 4 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFULL.....

A nicely crafted film, some gorgeous artwork backed up by a half decent story and some excellent audio. I wasn't sure how Goro miyazaki would fair up against his fathers masterpiece's but i must say that it can hold its own. It is not the most original story line but there is some excellent visuals and a nice feel good factor about this film.

Customer rating: 4 out of 5 stars Just Beautiful

Top 100 DVD Reviewer

The Ghibli films have always had a knack for being visually stunning and Tales from Earthsea is certainly no different. The magical world is brought to life in vivid colour and amazing detail that even the youngest will appreciate.

However, perhaps the story will not capture the youngest viewers as much as other Ghibli works. Though it weaves a wonderful tale (taken of course from the original novel, or at least some of it has been) there are scenes that may be too long winded/complicated for young viewers to undertstand and too slow for those who prefer some action.

However, Ghibli films have always captured the eye of those who have long left childhood too, and they will be able to appreciate the smaller details in both story and setting. The viewer isn't overloaded with characters and there is the typical bad guy we can all love to hate, instead of the bad guy we should hate but can't. Perhaps the relationships (as opposed to friendships) are not covered as well as could be, as Teru goes from hating Arren to being close in the time it takes to sing a song. Albeit, a wonderfully mellow song.

Overall, not my favourite from this studio, but its certainly not one to be put to one side. Goro Miyazaski has a lot to live up to and has done well to keep in with the epic beauty of many of the Ghibli films.
