Surface: The Complete Series (4 Discs)

Ok, so yet another decent series cut short without a thought for the viewers, thanks again american networks. Try to ignore the previous reviews as one person hasn't seen the whole series, another seems to have watched a different programme altogether and the other is more concerned with why haven't the top and bottom of the picture been cut off. It is not in widescreen....good! I get to see the whole image. The series is about a large creature, a new species, but not a dinosaur. I can't say anymore of its origins as it will spoil it but it's an original story, especially in the days of 'oh good, another detective programme'. It's slow to start but as the writers were told it was being cancelled they shortened the series and that's when it got really exciting and I couldn't wait to see the next episode. This really should have been given a chance but you do get a definitive ending unlike some other cancelled shows. Now the dvd boxset on the other hand is a different matter. When a character is speaking Russian and the subtitles are in Spanish....that's plain stupid. It's a cheaply made boxset, the title screen was done in someone's lunch hour with no special features despite what is says in the description. It's a good little series worthy of your money, but don't expect anything other than the episodes themselves. The Spanish subtitle thing isn't a major problem as only one or two lines are said in Russian in the whole series. Give it a chance for something different with a few amazing moments but ignore the shocking presentation of the boxset.

So I had the day off and looked at the entire box set. What you get is a montage of previous aquatic sci fi. Storyline never really concluded. Too many unanswered questions leading to the correct assumtion that it's creators were looking for a 2nd series which is unwarranted. A stumbling storyline connected each episode leading to the final 15th which left me asking " So , is that it ? "

It has 2 plus points - I bought it at a discount and the show has been cancelled.

I missed this series when it was briefly (only 3 episodes) shown on ITV1.
I have just watched the Pilot episode and was surprised that the on-screen captions were in Spanish and not in English. The audio was in English, as selected from the main menu. So why did the producers of the DVD put the captions in Spanish.
Although this is a small point, the episode was very good. I've still to watch the other episodes and wonder if the captions on those episodes are in Spanish.

This was one of the best, original series that came out of USA - and was sadly axed when it didn't deserve it. As the series reached it's season one finale it was clear that the writers had reached a point where it would be quite hard to continue the storyline - but what a story that was!

Having just received the boxset, I am right away disappointed. Firstly this isn't in widescreen but 4:3! Hello 1990's! How I wish this was out on a HD format.

Secondly from the few episodes I have watched, they have fixed Spanish subs with English audio. The Menu screen consists of Episode and language selection and that's all. Why there are Spanish subs when the user chooses English audio I just don't understand.

Surface on the whole was great for those who love sea creature sci-fi flicks, ala deep rising or abyss. The acting is Ok but nothing special. It's just sad this boxset doesn't show it off fully. A 4:3 aspect ratio is a step back in time.

An excellent price, wasn't expecting too much and thats what it delivered, story a bit rubbish, but at that price a bargain.
