As Hannibal "The Cannibal" Lecter, Anthony Hopkins is the archetypical antihero--cultured, quick-witted, uncontainable--a portrait of the sharpest human faculties gone diabolically wrong. His performance marked him as a major star in America, and the movie swept the 1991 Academy Awards--Best Picture, Director (Jonathan Demme), Actor (Hopkins), Actress (Foster), and Screenplay Adaptation (Ted Tally, from the novel by Thomas Harris).

The Best Horror and Crime Thriller EVER

FBI Trainee, Clarice Starling, has been assigned to question the incarcerated serial killer Hannibal Lecter to capture another serial killer, Buffallo Bill. Anthony Hopkins' powerhouse performance as Hannibal the Cannibal will make your spine chill, he knows how to show evil. Jodie Foster is always brilliant she can bring emotional acting into real life, everything she did with Clarice Starling was given it's 100%. Jonathon Demme brought his fantastic vision to the film and he done it so successfully. Although this maybe too disturbing for some people. This has got to be not only the best Hannibal Lecter film but the best horror and crime thriller.
A REMARKABLE FILM

The first of Thomas Harris's Hannibal novels to be adapted for the screen, only to be followed some years later with some very lacklustre (but inevitable!) follow-ups, despite it's age this remains one of the most effective chillers of modern times. The film has some truly disturbing scenes in it, especially the part at the end where Clarice is in the dark looking for the killer. That really freaked me out the first time I watched this.
Performance wise, in what was a pretty early role for Jodie Foster, she showcases what was come for the rest of her career. Anthony Hopkins is of course amazing in his role as Hannibal Lector, for someone who is not on screen that much and then to go on and win an oscar for best actor shows what kind of performance he put in here.
Without a doubt the greatest thriller of all time. Exceptional!
IT'S STILL A VERY GOOD THRILLER !

This is the best of Hopkins turns as Lecktor. The film now seems tame, but back in 1991 this was deemed shocking, as never had a main stream Hollywood production touched on Cannibalism. Hopkins turn is a power house performance, but to be honest Brian Cox's Lector in the 1986's Manhunter, the first movie adaption of the earlier book Red Dragon was more chilling.
But it's Foster as young F.B.I agent Stalin who walks away with the film. Her hunt for the killer Buffalo Bill, a Psycho who likes to skin his victims and make a nice suit out of them. Is brilliant , and the final scenes where she finds the lair of the killer is nail biting.
If you have not bought any other versions of this film, this is a essential purchase. But if you have already got the one disc or two disc version, don't bother, as MGM seem to realse a new version of the film every year !
