Edward Norton, a fantastic actor they could not have chosen anyone better to play this part. Not only that but this film grips you right untill the end.
It is a great movie and could watch it over and over untill I just couldn't cry anymore!
DO NOT BUY THIS VERSION!

Excellent film, but Momentum's dvd-release maims the cinematography by doing a 16/9 pan-&-scan on a movie shot in 2.35:1. Discriminating film lovers will know to steer clear of this!
Beautiful, touching, tragic

Incredibly romantic and visually stunning, the Painted Veil quietly grips the viewer and does not let go, even long after watching.
Both leads give outstanding performances. With few words, but looks that speak volumes, Edward Norton brilliantly conveys the depth of passion of a quiet man and, as the film progresses, Naomi Watts subtly reveals how depth and understanding can grow in an apparently-shallow young woman.
If you are moved by pent-up passion, and yearn for unrequited love to be returned, this film is for you.
A thoroughly good watch!

this has been one of the most enjoyable movies i have seen for a long time. It was one of those movies that i kept thinking days after about as its romantic, sexy, and addictive viewing. Both are very good actors and work well together in this movie. Soundtrack is also very good.
Wasn't expecting much, but.....

Everything about this film is superb! A gripping and moving story, flawless acting, stunning cinematography, plus a beautiful and mesmerising soundtrack. Highly recommended for anyone with an attention span longer than five minutes.
Easy to appreciate, hard to like.

It's a shame when a film that has obviously had a lot of effort put into the adaptation and direction, is such a chore to sit through. Despite all the technical achievements, there is very little passion on-screen - and that is a vital element in any romance. Odd really, as Norton can show emotion when he wants to, and does so in this film - it's just that for the most part he's required to sleepwalk through his role. There is some joy to be had from the supporting characters, but that isn't enough to make this essential viewing.
FANTASTIC!!!!

Unfortunately had to watch this on a tiny 4" plane screen and I missed it at the movies. But I will be buying it as soon as it comes out on DVD.
The story is about a Dr of infectious diseases (Norton) who goes to a remote area of China with his newlywed wife during a massive cholera outbreak.
Watts and Norton are absolutely amazing in this and helped co-produced it. The cinematography is absolutely breathtaking and the music (Classical) is perfect for the period.
It is a story of love, forgiveness, betrayal and selfishness and plays on the emotions right till the very end.
It may not be everyone's taste. However I am certainly not a big fan of period drama but I still loved it.
GREAT MOVIE

Emotional and feeling. Wonderful scenery and such a real life story which made you think about relationships and how complicated they can be.
I enjoyed it immensely. NO BAD LANGUAGE for a change which was very refreshing and the few sexual scenes were tastful and acceptable.
