Taken without reason. Imprisoned for 15 years. Released without reason. 5 days to seek the truth...
One day in 1988, ordinary white collar worker Oh Dae-soo (Choi Min-sik) is kidnapped and incarcerated in a private makeshift prison cell, dressed up like a cheap hotel room. With only a TV for company, Dae-soo makes numerous attempts to escape and to commit suicide but they all end up in failure. All the while Dae-soo asks himself what made a man hate him so much enough to imprison him in solitary confinement with no explanation. While suffering from his near-madness, Dae-soo becomes shocked when he watches the news and hears that his beloved wife was brutally murdered. At this very moment, Dae-soo swears to take revenge on the man who destroyed his happy life.

15 years on and without a word of warning Dae-soo is released. Given a new set of clothes, a mobile phone and the attentions of curious sushi waitress Mido, Dae-soo begins to track down his enemy, only to find he may be the pawn in a much bigger game which is only just beginning. Taunting Dae-soo, the culprit gives him just 5 days to catch and kill his captor or Mido will die...

Based on Japanese manga of the same name by Minegishi Nobuaki and Tsuchiya Garon, winner of the Jury Grand Prize at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival and winner of 5 Grand Bell awards in Korea (including Best Film for Park Chan-wook and Best Actor for Choi Min-sik), 'Old Boy' is a masterfully inventive revenge thriller complete with blackly comedic moments.

 Truly Unmissable

I am rubbish when it comes to films with subtitles. But I had heard so much about this Korean film, I was prepared to make an effort. There was no effort involved, I was captivated from beginning to end, I dont want to make comparisons with Tarantino because that would do Oldboy a disservice. Stylish, and original, this film manages to be edge of the seat entertainment, but funny and desparately moving at the same time.

If South Korea has anymore films like that, then i've been missing out and especialy you Tarintino fans. So i suggest you Tarintino lovers watch this film if you want to see gruesome torture. And if you want to know what i'm getting at, a guy having his ear cut off in Reservoir Dogs is soft compared to what happens in the OldBoy. This film is not for everyone. But if you seek originality and like being suprised by how far violence can go then you'll love this film. Not forgetting though that the best part of this film is how it gets the viewer to question if revenge is worth seeking.

The music score is superb, worth the purchase of the sountrack ( I am off to buy it tomorrow). Ok then, the plot: this bloke gets imprisoned. Why, or by who, or where he is imprisoned, is a mystery to him and the audience. Then he is released after 15 years and has to find out why. Just watch this. Its the best thing I have seen in ages and has gone straight in to my all time top 10. Ever! I think it will stay there. Watch this, and then have fun as I did casting the horribly inevitable Hollywood remake. Keanu in the lead then? Perish the thought!

 Stylish but incoherent

Park's mystery revenge thriller is extremely stylish, but ultimately let down by the poorly executed storyline.

If you suspend your disbelief and let the comic-book archetype supervillain weave his implausible masterplan against the deeply flawed questing antihero then you can probably appreciate the slick camera work and decent performances from the lead actors.

I suspect it may be the real-world mileu of the film offers too few cues to accept the flights of fancy that are necessary to the plot. Overall the devices used offer nothing that's any more unlikely than most western comic book or science fiction franchises, but without the familiar genre markers we're likely to attempt to interpret the film in a more realistic light, which does it no favours.

It's refreshing to have such a deeply flawed protagonist, there is little to like about Choi's character Oh Dae-Su. We feel sympathetic to his plight, but that sympathy is constantly challenged by his amorality, violence and hatred.

The film is fairly violent, which I guess may put some people off. However, there are some amusing touches that make for the style of the movie; such as after a typical (but well executed) fight scene where Oh Dae-Su single handedly beats a host of goons, said goons feature in a later scene wearing slings and bandages.

 amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is one of the greatest Korean films i have ever seen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The acting is done superbly and the scenes within the film are just genius!
However i would not recommend this film for the faint hearted as their are some scenes within the film which are very vivid and painful to watch, both mentally and physically.
over all like the others in the trilogy amazing! just buy this film!

This is a powerful and refreashingly cool film with many moments of genius. i have given it the 5 stars because it is a fascinating story and has tremendous shock power. In a scene which involves the lead character entering the real world again, he goes to a sushi bar and orders anything "LIVING". this turns out to be a wriggling gooey octopuss. The actor actually ate it on film. Thats just a taster on how extreme this film is. it maybe a tad strong for me but thats fine because what the director has done is he has balanced it out with slow arty moments and character depth which makes the film more enjoyable.

Admittedly i dont buy very many foreign language movies, trying reading lines as well as trying to watch the movie didnt really appeal to me. I had this movie recommended to me by a friend and thought "4.99, why not?" and i'm glad i did, i had no trouble following the movie as a lot of the story becomes apparent as you go along without having to read all the subtitles.
If your looking for a movie that keeps you thinking and you love a brilliant twist then you'll love this movie. I would recommend this film purely for the long corridor take but all in all its a true classic and a must see. XD
