I bought the definitive editions of the first three Alien movies from play, all had the metal case, so I assumed that The Terminator defintive edition would have the same case as well, turned up today and it is just a normal dvd case, so i was quite disapointed and i think play should make it clear that this isnt a steel book case. You would be better off buying the original two disc special edition, its cheaper and has the same extras.
This is a re-release of the Special Edition, which is the best version available on Region 2, but is now out of print.
Reason: Picture - Excellent, Sound (5.1) - Poor, Extras - Excellent!
If I was you I'd buy the Region 1 Special Edition if you have a multi-region player - this has both the 5.1 and 2.0 mixes on it so the customer gets the choice, although this too is now out of print.
Buy this version if you are Region 2 only, but be aware the sound is not good, compared to the original 2.0 mix of the theatrical release.
If you want the best version for all reasons: Picture, Sound, and Extras, and you are multi-region compatable, buy the Region 1 'Special Edition' if you can find it (it too is out of print now).
There is no doubt that The Terminator is one of the best films ever made. I couldn't wait for it to be finally released on DVD and when it first appeared on region 2 Special 2 disc set I have to say I was disappointed. Why? The audio! It has been given a new 5.1 soundtrack and the gun sounds etc bear no resemblance to that of the original 2 channel mono soundtrack. In fact, they sound worse - cheap! OK, the music sounds a lot clearer and up to date but I think this new stereo 5.1 mix makes the film lose its 'cult' 80s feel.
Would it be too much to ask to put the original mono soundtrack on the DVD as well as it wouldn't take up much space, especially on a dual layer DVD-9 (there is always loads of space left on DVD-9 discs).
If you are a big fan of the film like me and have seen it numerous times before the DVD came out then you will know what I am talking about. Just compare an old VHS copy to the DVD and you will see what I mean.
When I watch a film I want to watch it the way it was originally, the way I remember it. I don't like it when people like George Lucas 'fiddle' with their movies (I will make an exception with Blade Runner).
The Terminator came out again as an "Ultimate Edition" and still no mono soundtrack option. Then it has come out yet again as this "Definitive Edition" and, you've guessed it, no mono soundtrack again!
If I was you I'd buy the Region 1 Special Edition if you have a multi-region player - this has both the 5.1 and 2.0 mixes on it so the customer gets the choice (it's available to buy on this site). My DVD player is not multi-region so its back to my old VHS copy I'm afraid :(
An absolute classic. With its outstanding action sequences and relentlessly fast pace this film doesnt give the audience a chance to breath. Arnold Schwarzeneggers best film (along with Terminator 2) This film really amazed me the first time I saw it and ever since then I have been fascinated with films. For that I will be forever grateful!!
The Terminator movie is just one of those movies that theres not really any point picking faults in.
Quite simply because it is a All Time SciFi Action Classic.
Its got Brilliant Story, Spot on performances from Arnie, Michael Bien and Lind Hamilton.
The direction is assured and shows glimpses of what James Cameron would do in the future.
Some of the effects look a touch dated, but nothing to tragic.
Defo worth watching this and following it up with the even better Part 2, the below par Part 3 and the new Salvation Movie.
