The Long Good Friday

One of my all time favourite films, I only discovered the film a couple of Years ago when a newspaper was giving it away Free, I have since bought the proper DVD and it is a Brilliant film, I am not into the over the top violent films, and was aprehensive at watching this first time but it had me gripped from beginning to end, it goes to show you can make a gangster film without excessive violence and the stellar cast makes this movie free flow, you are not given time to be bored because the story keeps you gripped even in the quiet scenes. As mentioned by another reviewer everyone should have this DVD on their shelf because it is a classic. I am now going to get my copy off the shelf and watch it again tonight.

This film nearly didn't make it to the screen as all the top studios turned it down. Cue independent film company, Handmade Films, partly owned by ex-Beatle George Harrison, and rescued it, giving us one of the best British gangster films ever made.

Bob Hoskins is outstanding, Helen Mirren trying to keep it all together and watch out for chilling performance from Pierce Brosnan in one of his first, small but integral roles.

Brilliant story, brilliant acting and brilliant score this should sit in your DVD collection with pride. A must buy.

simply a true british classic.set in london in the gangland underworld,bob hoskins turns in a brilliant performance alongside helen mirren and a very young pierce brosnan.its the ira against the harrys gang in this one.a fabulous film from start to end with a twist or two along the way.

*Harold (Bob Hoskins) is a Gangster trying to legitimize his assets with a number of businesses. He looks for oversees investment. But when his business associates arrive in London it becomes apparent someone is out to get him. Harold goes on a mission to find out who is after him before his business ventures are ruined!
*Harold starts the film looking like more of a business man than gangster. Throughout the film we see more insight into Harold's character. His antics are brutal and it becomes apparent why he runs London! Unlike some of the cardboard cliche Gangsters with poor cockney accents in a lot of movies Harold is a menacing character played extremely well by Hoskin's. The pace of the film keeps your attention and it becomes extremely tense. Great Script, great acting and great film. One of the best films of its time and one of the best British Gangster movies ever.

Can not belive how many of the younger lad's dont know this film, it has to be the most classic london gang film of all time.bob at his best, the plot is fantastic & to see the dock's not long after them being cleared in this film give's it just more realism.if you have a young lad into his gang films then this is a must, keep the flag flying for old school .
