Dexter: Season 1 (4 Discs)

A number of the best TV shows of the last decade seem to have featured an anti-hero in the lead role (The Sopranos, The Shield, Breaking Bad) and Dexter can certainly be counted alongside the very best.

Based on a series of novels Dexter centres around the life of serial killer Dexter Morgan. Unlike most serial killers however he has a code. Taught to him by his foster father the code states that he can only kill people who 'deserve' it and, thanks to his work as a blood splatter analyst for the Miami Police department, he is in the perfect position to find his victims.

Michael C Hall (who many will know from Six Feet Under) is superb in the title role as a man trying to hide his true nature from the world and even during regular scenes you can always see a glint of the dangerous man that lurks just below the surface. This first season focuses heavily on the 'ice truck killer' another serial killer that, unlike Dexter, is worried about keeping his killings a secret. Dexter's fascination with his fellow serial killer and the way in which it affects his relationships with friends and family, all of whom are played superbly, is brilliantly written and makes for some unique and fascinating television.

Everything eventually builds to an intense and unexpected conclusion making the first season of Dexter amongst the very best openings to any drama series seen on TV.

Dexter is one of those shows, like 24, where you simply have to keep watching. Completely addictive, I was glued to my television for nearly five hours straight before I managed to pull myself away - rarely does a show keep me so enthralled I have to keep watching!
The plot is a little silly and quite gory in many different places, however it doesn't stop the great scriptwriting and acting completely shine through. It's not quite a five star show, though - I can't help but feel something about it is missing.
It may be that I'm distracted - I simply can't work out whether I think Michael C Hall is attractive, or just creepy.
I have season two ordered now to make up my mind.

Dexter is a fantastic show, and from the very first episode I was hooked.
The pacing of the show is spot on, never slow and never too fast, giving you enough time to develop an opinion for the characters, whilst never getting boring.
The characters are excellently developed, and the acting is brilliant.
I will definitely be buying season 2!

I was recommended by a friend to buy this, as soon as I watched it I was straight back on Play.com to buy Season 2 & 3.
Michael C Hall, Jennifer Carpenter, Julie Benz and other cast members all just brilliant actors.
Awesome storyline, never been so addictive to a TV series in my life. Absolutely brilliant.

Seriously, WOW! The show has never stopped surprising me, the stories, the characters, every single detail is perfect. The way M.C. Hall manages to portray both the good, the bad and then the down right sadistic side of Dexter Morgan is amazing.
Thoroughly enjoyable; people will tell you how great the show is, but you can't imagine how great until you've watch it for yourself.

Just finished watching this. It is one of the best TV series ever, right up with the likes of Prison Break, Lost and Heroes. Very cheap to buy as well, a perfect christmas or birthday gift for anybody who enjoys watching good american TV series.

I envy those of you who are yet to embark on the thrilling story of everyone's favourite serial killer as you have so much to look forward to from this creative, bold and all-round brilliant drama, should you make this purchase.

If you are thinking about buying this for Christmas maybe, or just for yourself, then rest assured that your money will not go to waste on what critically could be the best TV shows of all time, definately in this generation.

Being an avid fan, I am currently watching the 5th season which is currently being aired in the states and it still doesn't fail to surprise or keep me totally captivated. The message here being, that this show just keeps delivering despite setting the benchmark high with this brilliant opening season.

Seasons 2 and 3 are also very good, but season 4 is incredible and starting this show with the incentive of getting to season 4 is well worth it. Season 5 has 3 episodes to go as I write, and it's looking like it could topple 4. What you will notice is that the character evolves and this is truly addictive to watch.

I cannot stress much more about how awesome this show is. I'm not one for gore and horror, I don't watch horror movies, but this is a very clever show which any intellectual will enjoy. It's not for the faint-hearted, it's a show for a mature audience, as most youngsters will not understand a lot of the meanings and plots in the show, let alone the swearing and violence. This is aired on Showtime in America which indicates it's nothing like some of the commercial garbage you may get with abc/fox productions. This is brilliant and deserves all its success.

I was recommended this series by a friend and thought 'why not' and order Season 1 a few weeks back. I had heard or Dexter before through adverts on the TV but never took notice of it. Well, after a month of waiting (the first time I didn't receive my DVD so I had to wait 3 weeks for Play to send it again) I sat down and started watching it.

After watching 3 episodes in the space of 3 days I was left wondering 'where have you been all this time'. I was really impressed with it. I spent the next week watching the rest of the series and loved it. The twist at the end was great and just the overall feel of the storylines and meaning behind the show is fantastic. I loved it.

I've since ordered series 2 and will be ordering 3 then 4 over the next few months. Like one of the reviews below, I don't want to rush watching it. I can't wait for Season 2 to arrive though, it should be any day now.

Bring on Series 2...

i first started watching dexter with my boyfriend, and as i knew before i started watching it, i couldnt get into it. i thought i would give it a go anyway, and now i cant seem to put it down, the first season is just amazing - and it amazes you how he's so sneaky killing people but working for the police at the same time!
i've seen all the seasons, and im halfway through watching season 5, which is also amazing!
deffinately a good buy and money well spent too, hope you enjoy it as much as i did!!!

I got into dexter in season 2. currently watchin the season 4 on FX fridays.. Season 5 is out in the USA and shame we wont see it for another year. However I ordered season 1 to finally see the first series.. it arrived this morning and now at 2am i have finished watchin the whole thing back to back. Couldnt bring myself to turn it off for more than an hour.. I just had to keep watching.

It is one of the most well written programes I have watched in years and the way Hall protrays Dexter is brilliant.

Series 2 also arrived today which I will re watch just not as fast. Why rush it a second time? enjoy it even more. Shame that I am watching 4 as live... Its already been 8 weeks .. doesnt seem like it.. but I just cant help myself reading up online about what happens next. However still watch every second of it to see how its done. Amazing show.

A must for anyone who enjoys a good thriller with a twist.
