this prequal was excellent in my opinion, not as good as the remake because the end was really poor, could have been so much better but before the end its really good, keeps you on edge and has the gore factor

The 2003 remake was a pleasant suprise, being just as good as the 1973 original. This prequel to the 2003 re-make tries to explain the back story of the sadistic Hewitt family and most of all Leatherface. Don't be mistaken this is just a excuse for a re-run of the 2003 film, but being even more gore filled and sadistic. This is not such a bad thing as the 2003 version was excellent. What this film lacks with new shocks almost makes up for with more screen time for the Sherrif ( R.Lee.Ermey ) He is so good in this kind of role, as he basicaly plays the same guy he played in FULL METAL JACKET. The film also again has a excellent music score and is at it's most powerful with the scene of the rising sun and the sherrif standing at the side of the road waiting for his victims. Again the victims are quite well written for this type of movie. Also added in this film is thr Dinner table scene thats a nod back to the original, and was lacking in the 2003 film. I have to warn people there will be no happy ending to this film and this ending is very downbeat. A worthy addition to any horror fans collection.

"Be prepared, be very prepared"

The original Texas was shocking in that it relied on a build of tension and anticipation of what was about to happen and surprisingly, promised but delivered little gore, it was very successful as to what could be achieved on a low budget, however modern cinematography is now capable of giving the addition of very realistic special effects, make no mistake, these effects are very realistic!

See the 2003 remake before you watch this, as this film only acts as a prequel to this version.

I have watched "Hostel" and the like, this is different, don't expect any "Cutaways", what you anticipate is what you get, this truly is the most horrific and graphic film that I have ever watched, whist the original was a landmark film, this one, takes you two steps further and puts you straight in where you do not want to be and keeps you there!

The acting is very good, particularly the Sheriff, but if you want more character building of the family, then you must watch the 2003 remake, as it is limited in this film in that it focuses on the "Horror".

Remember, you know that the "Rollercoaster ride is going to make you sick, but you "Still jump aboard", get ready!

WOW!! Forget hostel or anything else claiming to be the biggest Gore fest ever, because look no further than this movie! Firstly if your buying this, you pretty much will know what to expect: Gore, Scares, Gore and a bit more Gore...it delivers!! Forget the 'blow torch scene in Hostel, check out the bit in this movie where Leatherface decides he wants a 'new face'! This film is more than just about Leatherface though. The plot is also massively based around the sick Sheriff and the whole Hewitt family. This film doesn't work at all as a prequel to the version of the texas chainsaw massacre, but can be loosely attached to the recent remake. Doesn't really offer too much as a prequel though really. Just a younger leatherface discovering his chainsaw and we also learn how the shady sheriff gets his badge. I always wondered how the heck he became sheriff? Apart from that, its just Horrible...in a good way!
Very dark with some really disturbing scenes. Steer clear if your easily shocked.

as the title of the film suggests this is a prequel to the first film yet its the follow up film to the remake, i use the word prequel very very lightly as there is bbarely anything about his childhood at all which is what the film was meant to be about.
HOWEVER this is the film that the remake should of been, so ignore the remake and buy this if you want an updated version of the massacre. decent kills and a horrible film (in a good way) watch out for the bit where the girl is hiding under the table =]
so if your not looking for a complex story but want a new version of the texas chainsaw films this is the one for you and skip the remake, buy this instead.

To get the most money out of a successful movie, is has become quite popular to make films about "how it all began" and lame sequels, as well in the horror genre as in others; ex. Halloween, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, Dumb and Dumber 2, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, Mission: Impossible 2, American Psycho 2 and Alien vs. Predator. All perfect examples that the originals were all fine and didn't need any pre- or sequel, which unfortunately also is the case of "the chainsaw".

In the opening sequence we see the birth of Thomas Hewitt (a through out disgusting scene), how he gets thrown away and found in a trashcan. After this we get a few minutes of his brutal raise., and then we cut to the well known car with the teenagers, which (of course) have a car accident, and ends up in the clutches of the family, which has a quite awkward feeling of what kind of meat to put on a barbeque.

In the first 2/3 of the movie, we don't see much of the giant with the chainsaw, but most of sheriff Hoyt torturing the poor teenagers; unfortunately this is extremely boring to watch. But in the last 30 minutes, Leatherface grabs his chainsaw and we get all the cutting, sawing and butchering so blood and limbs are flying like confetti in all directions. Unfortunately the sneaking horror and the unpleasant luring in the dark are all gone. The film's blood feast never gets as creepy and unpleasant as the original from '74 (the hook scene can still get my underpants to crawl up my crack). But "The Beginning"'s extreme use of blood and gore becomes more morbid entertainment than unpleasant horror - I actually found myself laughing from time to time, which I'm sure was never the intention.

The director Jonathan Liebsman (the man behind the dreadful "Darkness Falls") has no feeling with the suspenseful and creepy horror and runs amok in blood and gore instead. And because of this, "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning" ends up as an indifferent and expendable prequel, which unfortunately never cuts to the bone (so to speak).
