The All-Star cast in this film alone make this film worth watching with Dame Maggie Smith, James McAvoy, Anne Hathaway, Laurence Fox and Julie Walters are just some to name. It tells a beautiful story of Jane Austen's life, excellent acting included and if any of Jane Austen's novels appeal to you, you have to watch this! James McAvoy acting is excellent. 10/10 truly outstanding film.
disappointed

I am in love with period dramas but there was a certain lack of passion and romance toward the end
Wonderful

an excellent, romatic film, which is very well presented - acting/screenplay/music/setting all superb - watched it twice in same week!
simply wonderful

Being a Jane Austin fan i had to watch this film. I wasn't expecting anything brilliant because after she died i believed there was not much left behind (research wise) on her life, well not enough to make a film. Except her novels.
Well i take that back i thought it was Brilliant. Like the other review said 'you do truly believe that Anne and James are in love'. I think that is the best part watching them grow to love each other over a short period of time. Willing to risk everything and there relationships with everyone to be together. But i wont say anymore for the people that haven't seen the film.
I highly recommend watching this film. It will take your breath away (i had to try and remember to breathe). Anne Hathaway and James McAvoy both play the roles excellently and very believable.
'an enjoyable period drama' watched at cinema'

i saw this when in the cinema a while back.
didn't it take a long time to be released on 'dvd' mind you
the cinema release in the 'usa' is very recent, maybe that's why?
it's really not a bad watch, it's sensitive sometimes humerous, most of all it holds your attention.
'jane' follows her heart eventually, against the advice and wishes of those around her, especially her parents who
as was common in those days wanted their daughter to marry 'money.
what is her decision, loyalty or the irish charmer ?
a little fancifull with fact and fiction, done in a way to tie in her life expierience with her writings.( classic's )
it is a worthwhile watch, and yes i've bought the 'dvd'
hope this helps.
2 hours well worth wasted.

If you a fan of Jane Austen like myself or just like period dramas then you will love this film. The setting, dialog, and cast are fantastic. I love films with anne hathaway and julie walters and both of them together on screen was fantastic. This film shows you what life for Miss Austen was like, how she rebelled agaisnt the norm of a young women having to marry to live, by choosing to live by her pen. This film has dilema's, romance, and even a up herself old lady who chooses to hate Miss Austen. The chemistry between Anne Hathaway and James McAvoy is electric you actually belive that there in love. All the actors are truely talented and i cannot wait to continue watching this movie over and over again.
Outstanding!

This is a film well worth watching if you are a fan of Jane Austen, Anne Hathaway, James McAvoy, or indeed any of the members of the stellar cast.
The story is obviously not entirely based on fact, as not a lot of fact remains about Jane's early entanglement with Mr. Tom Lefroy. However the cast more than make up for this.
Anne Hathaway's accent does waver once or twice, but the emotion she instils in her role is admirable.
Julie Walters, James Cromwell and Dame Maggie Smith are all spectacular, also.
But the true star has to be James McAvoy: the man is flawless. He carries the accent, the character and the emotional role with seemingly effortless charisma. And as a plus, he is not at all bad-looking, (and personally I think that's an understatement!)
All in all a fantastic film and an instant favourite. Buy it now!

Great cast, except for Ms Hathaway. Cannot help wondering why they have to resort to American actresses to play icons of English literature? I think there are more than enough brilliant British ones to make a far better job of it.
