I had never heard of this film until a couple of months ago but decided to check it out. I do agree with most comments made on here and do feel the sway towards event horizon territory towards the end was unnecessary. However i do believe the overall performances and style of this movie do make it a modern day sci-fi classic. Lets face it films of this quality are few and far between. I particularly loved the scene where the crew were all in the same room watching mercury as it orbited the sun. I almost felt like i was there and could imagine what it felt like to experience something like that. If a film provokes thought and feelings like that. It can't be half bad. I recommend it to all sci-fi lovers and please judge it on its on merits.

I watched this film last night and was pleasantly surprised. I was expecting it to be Solaris with a little action - it is but also much more. If I were to compare it to any films I would say it's a mix of Solaris (which I found slow), Event Horizon (thought it was a great horror sci-fi) and a little of 2001 Space Odyssey. The film follows a crew of 8 on a mission to re-ignite our dying star the sun which has been fading and consequently caused many problems for the population of earth. The film centres around the crew and the mission, so don't expect to see some disaster movie Hollywood stuff on earth. What I liked about this film was its characters and how they dealt with potential impending doom and also what happens to them all and the sacrifices they make. I was suitably impressed with the camera shots and musical score, in the wrong hands I think this film could have been awful. All you have to do is accept the glaring error that humanity in just 50 years from now could have the technology to travel to the sun in a crewed space ship and have a device powerful enough to re-ignite something so huge as our sun ...... if you can accept that flaw (which I did from the start) you should enjoy the film and be surprised as I was. Enjoy.

Top 100 DVD Reviewer

BRITISH director Danny Boyle has created one of the brightest entries into the sci-fi genre in a long time with Sunshine, a jaw-dropping cinematic achievement that positively radiates with intelligence and edge-of-the-seat thrills.

A self-confessed fan of films like Alien, Solaris (the original) and 2001, Boyle has created a memorable experience that manages to pay respectful homage to such classics as well as something very unique in its own right.

Set in the not-too-distant future, the film follows the fortunes of an eight-man crew of scientists as they attempt to re-ignite the solar system's fading sun using a nuclear bomb the size of Manhattan.

They represent Earth's last hope and travel with the knowledge that a previous mission has failed. But as they begin to near their target, divisions emerge and crew members struggle to keep a grip on their sanity. Then they receive a signal from the previous mission's spaceship...

The great thing about Sunshine is the way that it thrusts you into the heat of the action from the beginning. Boyle doesn't feel the need to set the scene or investigate his characters' back stories.

Rather, they're mid-mission and almost immediately faced with difficult decisions. It's a clever device that grips from the outset.

The crew, too, is comprised of strong ensemble actors rather than A-list faces, making the trajectory of their demise more difficult to predict. And they're all on cracking form.

Chris Evans (of Fantastic Four fame) stands out as the brash engineer who puts the success of the mission above everything and everyone, but there's equally notable support from Hiroyuki Sanada as the ship's captain, Cliff Curtis as the psychiatrist, and Cillian Murphy, as the science expert - not forgetting Rose Byrne and Michelle Yeoh as well.

Boyle, for his part, isn't prone to making sentimental choices. No one is safe and all are prone to selfishness and survival instinct.

Alex Garland's script also has fun toying with notions of science and faith without ever resorting to too much techno babble, while the film's obvious parallels with global warming lend it a timely environmental edge.

The film does threaten to lose its way during the latter stages when Boyle veers more deliberately towards Alien territory (we won't ruin how) but Sunshine still maintains its pull even during its freakiest moments.

And visually it cannot be faulted, making a mockery of its modest production costs and proving that less can sometimes be more. The film looks stunning, mixing moments of beauty and savagery with effortless aplomb.

The end result is a truly special experience that confirms Boyle as one of the British film industry's shining lights. Audiences should go and be dazzled by its brilliance.

Fantastic! Saw this cracker in the cinema and couldn't wait till it came to dvd. Boyle goes back to cilian murphy for the lead role (28 days later) and he puts in a solid performance. Continuing on the acting, it was brilliant to see, say, no megastars who all put in convincing shows. When i saw Chris Evans name i couldnt help but worry slightly, as i didn't like him in Fantastic 4 but he was fine.

I loved the way Boyle starts with the world peril story but then adds the horror aswell, it gives it something else. Its really exceptional SFX aswell, the sun looked so bright and destructive, and the rocketship was well designed. There is so much more to this film then it seems. Brilliant film, brilliant crossing of genres and fantastic SFX, buy it now!

I honestly have to tip my hat off to Danny Boyle; I think he's pretty much done near enough the majority film genres to direct. When this was first announced; I had no idea what to expect - just another space movie? Nope. A whole new take on the space thriller genre - and Boyle has done it brilliantly.

Sunshine does for sci-fi thrillers what Apollo13 and Event Horizon did in the 90's, but takes them to a whole new level boasting awesome special effects and absolutely fantastic cast performances. Dispite only having 8 main characters for the crew; I can't really pickout a main performance as they all deliver extremely well. From start to finish, you are hooked by the gripping drama that the crew have to deal with. It goes much further than what Event Horizon gave us in horror scares, Sunshine delves into the characters persona's, and they share their fears with us.

As mentioned before, and probably by many others; Sunshine takes a page from Apollo13 and Event Horizon's book; mixes them together, and comes up with action, suspense and emotion as the end product. Albeit most people think the ending is a little premature; I personally think its a nice touch to a great British gem of a film. Boyle has once again shown how versatile he can be as a director. Bring on the next one Danny!
