I must admit that I was excited about the news of a new version of Jane Austen's Persuasion. I was deeply disappointed. Compared to the 1995 version, this was a rushy and very shallow movie. The characters are not introduced properly and we don't get a very close relationship with any of them, even not the heroine herself.
The first part of the movie gave me an impression of amateur filming, with a camera that moved too close into the faces of the characters. The introduction of new characters are sudden and rushed, and the scenes are changing quickly, so I sit with a feeling of stress.
What disappoints me the most, is the heroine. In contrast to Amanda Root's Anne from 1995, who is a very wise young woman and asked of everyone to give advice, this Anne is hardly speaking. In the last part of the movie, where she is seeking her love, she is running (!) to and fro. And then, when she and her Captain Wentworth finally meets and hearts are united, the kissing scene is just embarrassing.
It is very good that Jane Austen's novels are filmatised, and it gives me great pleasure to see the books come alive. But this version of Persuasion gave me no enjoyment at all, just a feeling of a low budget film with nothing of the charme, humour and wisdom that Jane Austen's books have. In short, if you love Jane Austen, don't buy this movie!
I do not agree with some of the comments.I found this adaptation very agreeable.I have both the 1995 & 2007 dvds and I found that the 1995 adaptation very dull, where the 2007 much more enjoyable.
Although it was only 1 hour and 32 mins long I found that quite adequate.
Sally Hawkins and Rupert Penry Jones brought a refreshing life into the story.
The scenes at Lyme Regis I found quite dramatic especially the walk along the Cob at Lyme.I have walked along there many at time in calmer conditions,so it must have been quite difficult when the sea was coming over the walls to do those shots.
Well done BBC for another cracking adaptation
This is a great adaptation of my favourite Jane Austen novel. Rupert Penry-Jones is superb as the handsome Captain Wentworth. Our heroine Anne Elliot is played exceptionally well by Sally Hawkins. She shows us Anne's nature in a way that is subtle and delicate. Very enjoyable....a must see for any Austen fan.
Great adaptation and a must see for fans of Rupert Penry-Jones!
I have seen a few adaptions of this-but this is the best one in my opinion. Its slow, easy build up adds to its charm. Add it to your collection today!
