From Playtone and producers Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman and Pippa Harris, Starter For 10 is a romantic comedy set in the mid-eighties about a working-class kid struggling to make his way in the rarified world of an upper-class British University.
On his way to achieving his long-held ambition to appear on the British TV Quiz Show, University Challenge, Brian Jackson (MacAvoy) falls in love with a beautiful teammate and forms a plan to win her heart through his advanced general knowledge skills.
Starter For 10 is a bittersweet comedy about loyalty, class, falling in love and the difference between knowledge and wisdom.

Good film but I'd rather read the book again.

I did enjoy this film, but I have to admit that the only reason I watched it and possibly the only reason I also really enjoyed it was the fact that the book was amazing.
I would have prefered that Alice and Spencer did not 'get it on' so to speak, and that it had happened as the book read.
I did like this film, but some parts made me cringe. For example, I couldn't stand Brian's roommates here from the first moment I saw them.
If you've read the book, then prepared to be slightly disappointed, as I was.
Best part of the whole movie for me were the actors. ^^
Nostalgia, great acting & hilarious moments

I loved this film. I had read the book and laughed out loud. This is well acted with a great soundtrack and took me back to the 80's. The only disappointment is that there were a couple of really funny parts in the book which were not elaborated on in the film. A great film for a Saturday night though.
A bit of a let down!

I thort this film was going to be in the mould of the History Boys but it wasnt. There are very few laughs & those that are are a bit lame, head butting someone then passing out is not that funny! The highlight was Mark Gattis as Bamber Gascoigne,oh & the end of the film!!
