Certainly not a film that was ever going to suit the masses or try to be a commercial hit as the likes of Troy or dare I say Gladiator. This is a very brave movie, depicting the true spirit of Alexander the Great. With absolutely breathtaking cinematography and some of the most impressive battle sequences ever shot on film, this is not just a movie it is an epic. The outstanding score by Vangelis greatly complements the experience and helps the drama of the action scenes. This film deserves to be watched without preconceived bias formed upon some most undeserved reviews. Reviews written by people who obviously couldn't grasp the concept of this opus by one of the most gifted directors of our time.
Very Good Film

I watched this film both at the cinema and i later brought it on dvd, the first time i watched it i was close to being let down,
However I desided to give it one more chance and watched it a second time.
I believe that the hype damaged the film alot, and if you watch the film properly you will also see a very good film, Many of the actor's skill's made this film as well as being very well directed,
This is not just a war film, this film has many side's. if you have passion and drive i feel you can feel close to this movie, Not the best movie out there but one to buy.
a must see for anyone who liked,
gladiator
troy
king arther
Missed the point

Oliver Stone used to be one of Hollywoods greatest directors - controversial, original, brilliant and with the ability to squeeze the best out of every actor. His two latest films however, "Alexander" and "World Trade Center", has been a disappointment. Although they have both been about interesting historical events Stone has been unable to make good movies out of the source material. When he now re-cuts "Alexander" for the third time and makes a 3 hr. 25 min. collossus out of it , it becomes slightly better but the flaws are still clearly visible.
The worst thing about "Alexander" was and still is the cast. Very strong names on paper but here they are misplaced. Worst of all is Jared Leto. With his expressionless face and his black eyeliner he looks and acts like a terrible drag queen. Colin Farrell has his moments, but is not able to convince us that he is the powerful person who had the world at his feet before he was thirty. Anthony Hopkins does a routine job as the narrator, while Angelina Jolie could have been the big star here. She has a very strong screen presence as always, but unfortunately she has been given a distracting accent that ruins her part.
Some of the dialogue is very bad written. Especially some of the dialogue during the more private moments between Farrell and Leto is so ridiculous and full of clichés it sounds like it is from the rehearsals of a schoolplay. These scenes are also directed and acted so poorly they are sure to make you laugh.
On the upside this longer version plays out with more power and flow than the earlier versions. Now starting with one of Alexanders greatest battles, and then going through his life chronologically. This is less confusing as you are not thrown back and forth in time as before. Alexanders character is also a bit more fleshed out here, which is absolutely needed as we are talking about one of histories biggest myths.
The biggest improvement is the battle scenes. These scenes was good also in the original version, but here they are improved further. Longer, bloodier and with a more detailed look at Alexanders groundbreaking military infantry strategies. These scenes stand out and can compete with battlescenes from any other movie. Here we can see the mad genius Stone at his very, very best. Brilliant!
Unfortunately these improvements are not able to save a movie still lacking in too many places.
I still hope we have not seen the last of Oliver Stone despite his last two floppers. The man has made movie history before, and should have it in him to do so again.
I give this movie 3 weak stars. If I had the opportunity to give 2.5 stars, that would be my verdict.
Third time€s the charm

I've seen the original Alexander and yes it was terrible. It was muddled, boring and not half the movie it could've been. I've also watched the director's cut of Alexander and that wasn't any better.
The Final Cut however, changed my perspective of this movie completely. The difference between the versions is obvious from the start. The more I watched the move, the more I enjoyed it. The scenes have been restructured which makes the movie flow much more smoothly, the battle scenes are longer with far more brutality and the overall movie portrays a much stronger, more focused Alexander.
Oliver Stone has totally changed this movie into the true epic it was meant to be.
what the hell, is this a film

this film is so poor that i could not bring myself to watch the whole thing. infact the only good thing about this film is that it sends you to sleep cause its so boring and slow. even an insomniac could fall asleep to this sorry excuse for a movie.

No matter how often Stone re-edits , remakes or tampers with this awful farrago of a self indulgent pile of tosh he cannot make it any better. Even without the shocking miscasting the script is a mess. I think he would have been better off using the few well directed battle sequences in a documentary and just buried this featureless film under the Alan Smithee moniker on its original release.
I suppose the only real surprise is how he got the extra funding to do another re-edit for yet another DVD release
