Roland Rat, Margaret Thatcher; Rubik's Cubes, the Royal Wedding; aerobics, skinheads... It's 1983, and the schools are breaking up for summer.

Shaun is 12 and a bit of a loner, growing up with his mum in a grim coastal town, his dad was killed fighting in the Falklands War. On his way home from school, where he's been tormented all day for wearing flares, he runs into a group of skinheads, who against expectations turn out to be friendly and take him under their wing. Soon Shaun discovers parties, girls and snappy dressing, and finds some role models in Woody, Milky and the rest of the gang. But when an older, overtly racist skinhead returns home from prison, the easy camaraderie of the group is broken, and Shaun is drawn into much more uncomfortable territory...

Brutal movie, made essential viewing by two excellent performances from Graham and Turgoose. In many ways it's like every movie Meadows has ever made (Once Upon a Time... excluded), but even if the structure feels familiar it's still worth watching to see how the characters end up at the inevitable conclusion

 dont believe the hype

I have just seen this film at the Watershed in Bristol. Having been born in 1983 when the film was set I was a bit too late to grow up in this culture but this in no way detracts from the brilliance of the film. I know its a cliche but its a real rollercoaster film of England. The start has you laughing 'till you cry until the middle where things become more realistic to the end which I will just say is quite graphic and moving all with a few cringe worthy bits in between. Anyone from any age group can see this film is England with all the gloss removed. Lets just say the tourist board won't be happy!!! It is very much like Snatch and Lock stock in that it shows with great clarity what did / does go on here and gives us a quick snippit of what these lives are like to actually live without gaining the criminal record by doing it yourself. This is something you can relate to as opposed to the usual American culture which many can't. Unlike Ameriacn film, there's No explosions, no soppy love story or unrealistic high jumps just good old brittish comedy, lust and violence. GO TO SEE IT, or even better BUY IT! Its got to be an english clasic in the near future up with the likes of the two Guy Ritchie films above, Full Monty and Billy Elliot.

Director Shane Meadows directs yet another gritty, dark and disturbingly realistic film that is based on his own awful past. The story is about a troubled young boy who falls in with a group of wild boys in their late teens but things take a terrible turn when an older, thuggish, bigoted racist returns from prison.Very well-made

 Shane's Biographical & Brilliant Film!

This is an excellent film and is based on Shane Meadows' own experiences (the character - Shaun Fields - deliberately autobiographical) and is...well... just a great film.

Music excellent too - maybe 'Come On Eileen' being an exception (how can you get nostalgic for folk who look like 'The Clampetts' on acid?)

It's also great to see that 'skinheads' are depicted fairly as opposed to the myth of them all being 'N.F.' etc. although it's certainly an issue that leads to a key point in the film.

There's enough humour in there to keep you hooked too - Shaun getting a crack for 'effing' in front of his Mum might not be 'p.c.' nowadays but a 'traditional '80s crack off one's Mam' brought back memories for me I have to say!
My favourite film of Shane's is "A Room For Romeo Brass", but this now HAS to be a very close second.

It may seem mad to review a DVD that hasn't been released yet (at the time of writing), but I'm obviously going off the actual film itself - so imagine how chuffed I'm going to be when it lands at my door with the 2nd disc full of extras!

What?

Good grief - get the thing ordered - what are you waiting for!
