Roland Rat, Margaret Thatcher; Rubik's Cubes, the Royal Wedding; aerobics, skinheads... It's 1983, and the schools are breaking up for summer.
Shaun is 12 and a bit of a loner, growing up with his mum in a grim coastal town, his dad was killed fighting in the Falklands War. On his way home from school, where he's been tormented all day for wearing flares, he runs into a group of skinheads, who against expectations turn out to be friendly and take him under their wing. Soon Shaun discovers parties, girls and snappy dressing, and finds some role models in Woody, Milky and the rest of the gang. But when an older, overtly racist skinhead returns home from prison, the easy camaraderie of the group is broken, and Shaun is drawn into much more uncomfortable territory...

Not bad but overated!! Meadows has done better!

There is a good message in this movie; however it moved with a pace which disallowed it to concentrate on the threads between scenes and between characters; however, the wardrobe on this production was excellent and realisitic. The storyline could have done without the bizarre underage relationship, which was a bit pointless. Some good scenes and great sounds but the script lacked a bit, and as a result the movie was predictable the whole way through. Meadows can do so much better. I love a good gritty British Drama - but this was patronising and boring to be honest.
Director Shane Meadows directs yet another gritty, dark and disturbingly realistic film that is based on his own awful past. The story is about a troubled young boy who falls in with a group of wild boys in their late teens but things take a terrible turn when an older, thuggish, bigoted racist returns from prison.Very well-made
Perfect!
