The world was watching in 1972 as 11 Israeli athletes were murdered at the Munich Olympics. This is the story of what happened next.
In Israel, the handsome and charming Avner (Eric Bana) is deeply in love with his pregnant wife. Domestic bliss is short-lived; immediately following the "Black September" attack in Munich's Olympic village, Avner, the son of an Israeli hero, is summoned by his country's famed secret service agency, the Mossad, to carry out violent retaliations against those Palestinian terrorists allegedly behind the massacre.
Commanded from afar by prickly government agent Ephraim (the inimitable Geoffrey Rush), Avner and his team of handpicked men - pugnacious South African Steve (Daniel Craig), goofy ex-toy maker Robert (Matthieu Kassovitz), morally conflicted Carl (Ciaran Hinds) and terse professional Hans (Hanns Zischler) - must deal with some shady, nefarious international figures as they track down their Palestinian prey. Their mission takes them from the villas of Rome to a seedy hotel in Cyprus and with each successful kill, Avner's iron will begins to dissolve as guilt and doubt begin to take hold of his conscience...
Based on the book Vengeance by George Janos.

This oustanding thriller is inspired by real events, as it reveals Israel's response to the the fateful seige at the 1972 Munich Olympic games. As M.O.S.A.D hires a hit squad to track down and assassinate the 11 Palestinians had had planned the Olympic massacre.
This is one of Spielberg's greatest, and most hard hitting films, and the vilolence is shocking, but very real. The film's cast is great as Eric Banner and Daniel Craig take leads in the death squad. The story is gripping, and is very even handed, and never takes sides between the Israeli and Palestinian situation.
This is a master-class of a thriller, but anybody wanting to see a slam-bang action film should stay away, as this film leaves you much to think about long after he credits have ended.
A very intelligent thriller that needs more than one viewing.
Outstanding!

Based on a true story, in the aftermath of the infamous Olympics in which the Israeli Olympic team were held hostage by militants, revenge is planned meticulously and carried out systematically by certain Jews against all those who harmed their brothers in the Munich disaster. Spielberg delivers this as a slow moving thriller with spouts of action, yet the story doesn't move fast enough for the scale of the events and gravity of the consequences.
