From director Neil Marshall (The Descent, Dog Soldiers) and starring Rhona Mitra (Shooter), Bob Hoskins (Outlaw, Nixon) and Malcom McDowell (Heroes, A Clockwork Orange) Doomsday is an action-packed, science-fiction thriller!

In Doomsday, a lethal virus spreads throughout a major country and kills hundreds of thousands. To contain the newly identified Reaper, the authorities brutally quarantine the country as it succumbs to fear and chaos. The literal walling-off works for three decades - until Reaper violently resurfaces in a major city. An elite group of specialists, including Eden Sinclair (Mitra), is urgently dispatched into the still-quarantined country to retrieve a cure by any means necessary. Shut off from the rest of the world, the unit must battle through a landscape that has become a waking nightmare.

After the excellent Dog Soldiers and the sublime Descent Neil Marshall has shot himself in the foot with Doomsday. This self inflicted wound is the kind that a German soldier would be executed out of hand for. There is no escape from the front for Marshall this time as Doomsday is just plain dreadful.
Marshall has obviously been given a fair budget this time round but has squandered it on effects rather than a tight script with well written characters that have been the hallmark of his previous films. Too many underwritten parts clog up the screen appearing and disappearing as if by magic; more likely butchered in the editing process to get the film running at a respectable length. At one point near the end Hoskins turns up in Scotland without any plausable reason other than to deliver a couple of lines of atrocious dialogue.
All that could be forgiven if Doomsday delivered on it's promise of extreme action and violence. Sadly the action is lightweight as we don't care about the characters enough rendering the considerable gore pointless and just unpleasent at times.
To make matters worse Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror was effortless in its amalgamation of 80s post apocalyptic movies whereas Doomsday is so completly obvious in what it has stolen from the genre that Marshall should have included a check list and pen.

There's enough here for five decent films; we have a zombie rip off, a Mad Max rip-off, a regular chase movie, John Carpenter riffs, and an unmade Bond film. Unfortunately it's impossible to slip smoothly from one to the other, and you often feel is if you're watching these different films spliced together. The movie starts slowly as it explains the ridiculous plot, and at this point you're hoping things will get better - if anything they get sillier. You've seen all the characters before, no one as interesting as in The Descent, let alone Dog Soldiers. Each of the individual set pieces work well, but there's no decent backbone to hold them all together. Marshall is obviously a highly talented director, but maybe he should leave the script writing duties to somebody else next time.

 Way better than I expected!...

What do you get if you combine Mad Max, Aliens, 28 Days Later, Robin Hood, Gladiator, and Top Gear?
A very enjoyable, action packed movie! With a very decent looking cast!
I saw this movie at the weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it. Don't go in expecting a profound storyline, but instead sit back and enjoy the action and carnage that is Doomsday.
Am hoping the DVD offers up some cool extras, maybe a few deleted scenes. Will definitely buy it when it gets released.

This is certainly no flop, this movie is an epic sci-fi masterpiece! this is Neil Marshall's best movie yet, dog soldiers and the descent were great but doomsday shows he's capable of a much higher standard! from beginning to end you get a great visual treat of a film full of violence and gore and action, this is one of the best dvd releases of the year, a MUST own, order now!!
