Dito (Robert Downey Jr.) is a successful writer living in Los Angeles, who is summoned home to Astoria after a 15 year absence when his father becomes seriously ill. Memories of his youth come flooding back as he revisits the old neighbourhood, attempts to rebuild a relationship with his father and encounters his 'saints' - Dito's few childhood friends who aren't in prison or dead. As Dito (played as a young man by Shia LaBeouf) finds himself whisked back into the youthful events that shaped him, an unforgettable cast of characters unfolds to the sweltering heat of 1986.

 What A Surprise!

I bought this before anyone had reviewed it in the hope that it would be alright. I watched it with my friend one night, not expecting much. Afterwards my friend shook my hand, thanked me for putting it on and asked if he could borrow it to show everyone he knew.
"A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints" is a piece of bloody brilliance. If you like gangster movies then you are bound to love this, even though it isn't really a gangster movie. Shia LaBeouf, Channing Tatum, Robert Downey Jr, Chazz Paliminteri & Rosario Dawson give outstanding performances and Dito Montiel has got it spot on. Buy now! But don't expect anything light-hearted.

Great Acting.
No story.
whats the point, there are some incredible actors in this film that are left to try there best with the little story they have got. go watch shia in transformers instead, rosario in clerks 2 and robert downsyndrome jr in a scanner darkly

Shia LaBeouf with another great performance.

This story of dito is truly powerful with great performances from everyone. The parts witht the young dito (Shia LaBeouf) are by far the best in the film. My only problem with the movie was the older dito part was not devopled enough in my opion i would have rather seen more with him meeting old friends and thought the fater son thing could have been devloped more but apart from that a truly great film at a great price

 brilliant

absolutely mind blowing, shia lebouf and rosario dawson both gave absolutely amazing and blistering performances, two of todays youngest and probably underrated actor/actresses of their age. ive only seen it once but i loved it and would definately watch it again, which i am going to do when it arrives :D

a brief word on this film. Outstanding performances, shia lebouf in particular, was blown away by his performance. This film is completly engaging, you get drawn in to the story, almost feel as if your imposing on the characters. The performances, dialogue, techniques are so raw and natualistic.Direction from Dito Montiel is superb. This film is a must see.
