i saw this film at the cinema a while back,i wasn't sure
how it would be portrayed,i just new it had an impressive
cast.
'william wilberforce' was a pioneer in his political struggle
to abolish the 'slave trade' ( shame someone of his integrity is not championing a simalar cause today )
one of 'william's' friends and supporter to the cause was
an ex-slave trader 'john newton' ( who was responsible
for putting the words to an african hymn 'amazig grace'
this is a very well presented film, and i can honestly say
i am looking forward to seeing again when the 'dvd' is
released.
look out for the 'scot's gaurds' performance of 'amazing
grace' on bagpipes at the close of the film, sends a shiver
down your spine.
Amazing grace how sweet the sound.

My wife and I watched this movie in a small theatre and were the only afro carribbeans in the audience. But I digress. This movie showed me that there are some great people out there that the modern world seem to know little or nothing about. I am ashamed to admit that as a british black male William Wilberforce was a name I heard without appreciating the significance thereof. This film has truly opened my eyes to the greatness of the human spirit. for a man to take on the slave trade at a time when it was not only seen as acceptable but as necessary for the economy had to be a man of extra ordinary concience as William Wilberforce was. This film moved me to tears and I will be for ever grateful for his contribution to this world. If want to see an example of what it is to be a great principled person then see this film!!!
"Amazing" Movie

This film is incredible - had me hooked from start to finish in the cinema & I've now watched the DVD at least twice & every time I see it, it makes me laugh, cry, smile, wince - its a true story told in a superb way. Ioan Gruffud is superb as are all the supporting actors. One of my favourite movies of all time. It will become a classic.
Brilliant Film...A Real Tear Jerker

Saw this one at the cinema, and left it with a tearful eye and a thankful heart of the work that William W started. Shame there is still slavery in the world today!
Great Film

This was a great film on a tough subject. Its a fresh film amongst masses of romantic comedies and thrillers. Ioan and the rest of the cast were great. I hope more directors decide to make films on forgotten subjects like this.
As good as it gets

A wonderful film. Well shot and well cast. It's not graphic in portraying the plight of the slaves (see Amistad for that) as its a film about William Wilberforce. He had the passion to stand against the rest of Parliament and say that whatever the economic arguments for slavery might be it was still morally repugnant. Year after year he was defeated in Parliament, and year after year he kept trying. Of course, he had the advantage of being right but that was of little help to him at the time.
A must watch. And remember also that Wilberforce freed the British people from the slave trade as well as freeing the slaves.
Well done British Film Industry.

Fabulous film, well-made and historically factual. Subject has always fascinated me, and have now purchased a copy of Mr Equiano's book.

I saw this film when it came out in the cinema. I was honestly questionable about how the film was going to portrayed such an important aspect of history. As a historian I was worried that the film would not live up to the truth of the matter.
I was surprised but releaved when I saw the film. It was made with such passion that I believe that the film did justice to the story. For those who now nothing of the abolution of the slave trade, here is a good place to start.
The film in my eyes was a triumph. Marked in the cinema by the round of applause it recieved when the film was finished. I would recommend this film to everyone.
brilliant
