Ronald D. Moore, the producer of Carnivale and writer for Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, boldly re-imagined the original 1978 space opera of humans versus the robotic Cylons. He teamed up with co-executive producer David Eick on a powerful and dramatic update of the Galactica story.
The modern show introduces new elements to the Galactica story. The Cylons have developed human-form models that are indistinguishable from real humans. The Cylons have a monotheistic religion in contrast to the polytheistic religion of the human Colonies.
In the miniseries, the Cylons launch a massive attack against the humans and wipe out the Twelve Colonies, sending the 47,000 survivors on a desperate search for the fabled 13th colony, Earth.

Overall, slightly the weakest season that BSG did. Unfortunately due to some pressure from the network, the makers were directed to make the story less continuing and more stand-alone. That didn't work, and the network let them get back to season 1 and 2 format for season 4.
Anyways, this run still has a huge amount going for it, with the first batch of episodes covering the fallout from the season 2 finale and then taking us deeper into the nature of the Cylons themselves - giving us more questions about their reasons for their plan.
Things build to a multi-strand finale, with both the trial of a major character, the return of a major character and the reveal at the end of just who the last Cylon models really are.
And a slightly below par BSG still manages to be as effective as any other regular drama series, so it's still well worth the time!
What a let down after such a promising first 2 seasons

Season one drew me in, season two kept me watching, but by half way through 3 I got bored and nothing in season 4 (part 1) reignited my interest. As for season 4 (part 2) "The Final Season" (thank god, but explained later) despite having Sky I got totally bored with it that I stopped watching it after 4 episodes and I am no longer interested in the conclusion (did they or didn't they find Earth - I stopped caring!).
Season 1 and 2 were for fans (like me) of sci-fi, by the time they got round to producing season 3 and 4 they clearly aimed it at fans of soap operas and it became more Dallas/Eastenders than Battlestar Galactica (either original series or season 1 and 2). What a let down, more so since I made the mistake of purchasing season 1 and 2.
I may eventually buy season 3 and the full season 4 and watch the conclusion some time, but only when the price comes down further than it's current price.
