Has to be one of the worst movies I have ever seen. And it's probably because the beginning is so good. Dark and twisted and scary I really liked it, but about 45 mins in you see where the story is going and you're like "what!!!!!!???!!".
So bad, stupid ending, ruined what could have been amazing, don't watch it at all, you'll just be disappointed. Even proper horror fans.

This movie had so much media attention before it even hit the screens (with the bilboard incident), so the hype for the movie was a pretty big one. The movie itself was directed in a very strange way. Scenes would only last for 5/10 minutes each time before continuous fade-out's. Cuthbert is an amazing actress who knows what emotions to play, and when- so she alone made the movie the best it could be. The gore is only big in 1 or 2 scenes and the ending was quite anti-climax.
Good acting, interesting plot and a few twists that keeps the movie going. Not a hardcore horror- i'd say more of a disturbing thriller.
BORING BORING BORING

So this is what you need to know. Originally, Captivity was set to be a psychological thriller until the films distributers got all nervy and demanded Roland Joffe film and recut it as Saw-style Torture Porn.
Cuthbert, a lady who was refused the role of Mary Jane Watson in Spiderman, took on the part because she likes to play strong, different characters.
The resulting film, with all the studio meddling and confused, re-edited script, is little short of a cinematic disaster!
Captivity is a nasty film. Its not very gory (really, compared to recent offerings) and its certainly light on scares and shocks, but it is a nasty, misogynistic piece thats light on character but strong on sadistic voyeurism!
The story is simple. Elisha Cuthbert's spritely character is captured early on (even the club scene drugging sits uncomfortably) and is then repeatedly terrorised by a stranger. Thats it. End of. Synopsis done!
In between all this she plays a game of survival in her prison room, discovers more about her surroundings and even finds a fellow, bricked up soul to confide in.
Then comes a blatantly obvious twist, some run of the mill, auto pilot storytelling and thats about it!
To her credit, Cuthbert puts her heart and soul into the project and is actually very likeable! Anyone who has seen her in House Of Wax or 24 will know she is a competent actress with a genuine ability to light up the screen with sex appeal and likeability whatever she has been in. Yet Captivity really is a train wreck of a project that offers her little more to do, for the first forty five minutes anyway, than beg for her life and say sorry.
The torture is not gratuitous, but it's also incredibly unpleasant as there is no explanation, no motive and certainly nothing concrete for the viewer to grasp hold of and form any kind of passive attachment to.
Its just a poor girl being put through the torture mill over and over... And over again.
Stick with the film to the end and you wont be greeted with anything shocking or suspenseful, instead you may find yourself cheering our plucky heroine on as she battles for her life... But you've seen it all before in many more superior films and therefore the only thing you will want to see are the end credits!
Captivity thinks its clever, it thinks its appealing to a mass audience who have been raised on such recent, gruelling hits as Saw I-IV and Hostel 1 and 2. Yet it clearly misses out everything that made those films watchable and instead merely gives us a brief but boring film that wont have you hitting the pause button when you nip to the bathroom!
So should you invest in Captivity? Well, for repeat viewing the answer is no. It's difficult to imagine a time when one would gladly reach over to their DVD shelf and endure a second viewing.
Captivity is nasty, unfulfilling and fast food junk of horror films. It has no nutrition and, once digested, leaves little more than a bad taste in the mouth.
Avoid, ignore and stay away unless you are a big Elisha Cuthbert fan and have to, just HAVE to buy all of her films.
For everyone else, stick to 24 or settle down with a copy of House Of Wax to get your Cuthbert filmic fix!
Fingers and toes crossed Cuthbert lands a more substantial role in a far superior film next time. She surely must be destined for bigger things than this cinematic offal!
Oh dear.

Lets just get this straight I LOVE Elisha Cuthbert and was really looking forward to this as ive enjoyed all her other works.......but boy was I disapointed.
This is basically just a saw/hostel rip off, with no real plot or direction its just a series of gruesome set pieces loosely tied together.
Where the Saw and Hostel movies aswell as gore add some intelligent subtext, this adds nothing more than an unpleasant taste in your mouth.
AVOID AVOID AVOID WORST MOVIE POSSIBLY EVER !
STAY AWAY

If you haven't seen this movie, do not buy it. Trust me IT IS NOT WORTH THE MONEY!
If you HAVE seen it and want it for the special features or for some weird reason you want to see this crap again, go ahead.
If you ask me, this is the WORST movie of 2007. Congrats Captivity.
Run-of-the-mill

This is run-of-the-mill, standard horror fare. I look for entertainment in a horror movie, not ingenuity, but this was a very dull, boring film. It is a blatant rip-off of the Saw series of films. I recommend Hostel and Hostel 2 over this film for pure entertainment value.
My 2 year old brother could watch it without avin nightmares

I can't believe sum people think this is a good film.... well its not ok! The first 5 minutes of Hostel is scarier!! I think its abit too farfetchd at the end! could of thaught of a better script and could of done with alot more blood and punishment! They shouldnt give it so much attention and hype!
