I can't understand how any film lover could not enjoy this film. Even just by watching the bonus features you can see how well this film was thought out. Like many have said, I believe that critics didn't like the fact that Carrey was doing something different to Ace Ventura or The Maskand they didn't know what to think. He is absolutely amazing in this film! The way he portrays two completely different characters is fascinating to watch. Critics should look beyond the ends of their own noses and actually take a film for what it is, and not look for what they perceive to be the way someone 'should' act.
If you love intelligent thrillers then I think you'll love this.
Jim carrey plays Walter sparrow, an obsessed man by the number 23 after reading a book about the number. after watching this i found myself and freinds at work adding numbers to come up with the number 23.. it will make you so paranoid its unreal. this fllm is dark and at times confussing, but stick with it and when the twist happens at the end its a nice shock.. no spoiler here.. watch and find out.. then feel the paranoid thoughts creeping in.. even your birthday date will be added up..
Good Non-Comedy Appearence From Carey

This film. It is plain from the title and film overview that the main character Walter Sparrow (Carrey) reads a book which contains a story around the number 23 and he begins to see it everywhere. The way this is explored is terribly gripping, once the film gets going i found it difficult to even blink until the final. The story does, however, drop off at a rather quick rate, but still has a fulfilling ending which leaves explanations for the main themes of the film and also leaves you with questions that can be answered by paying attention to the details of the film.
An excellent story of a man's obssession with a number

One of the best movies I have ever seen. Walter sparrow leads an ordinary life until he's late meeting his wife Agatha, who spends her time flicking through a book outside a shop in her wait. After encouragin Walter to buy the book, his obssession with the number 23 grows, and as the story unravels the obssession becomes more intense, until Walter's gruesome past is revealed. Slightly confusing storyline initially, but once you get your head around it, you'll definitely watch it again. And before you get put of by Jim Carrey, he plays an excellent serious charatcer, unlike some of his other films.
Great Film!!! And I will Tell You Why ....

.... to be absoloutly honest, the direction and script were not the best, and some of the number 23 mysteries were far far fetched. Jim Carrey on the other hand was brilliant and has proven many critics wrong. it really is suprising how often the number 23 pops up but its only because 2 and 3 are common numbers. (don't go crazy!!! haha)
So some of you may think this film deserves less stars, but in truth this film hits the maximum for one reason ....... it keeps you thinking and thinking. Watch it!!!
Fantastic! I was hooked

Such a good film! Its another film that needs quite a bit of attention so that when you get to the twist you can follow it and understand whats happened. Jim Carey is brilliant and its good to see that hes not limited to comedy films only. I am very impressed with this film and it is now one of my favourites
Brilliant..not for the dim witted!

I found this film refreshingly different. It grabs your attention from the start and doesn't leave you disappointed at the end. The plot was very clever and well directed, as well as the acting from Jim Carrey and the rest of the cast. It is very under-rated and I would recommend it to fans of Donnie Darko, The Butterfly Effect and Stir of Echoes. It is a film you still think about long after viewing.
Why do films have to have stupid twists

Poor poor script writing almost ruins what otherwise was a good film. A lesson to script writers if you are going to insist on a direction change in a film at least think it through I know a film can take you to another world etc but you should always believe in where your taken.
Worth watching

I was a little bemused while first watching this film, however, half way into it I was starting to think that the plot was changing and I was right, the acting was excellent I like Jim Carrey in some films not all mind you but thought his serious acting in this film was very good. And the ending has such a twist if you don't pick up the plot along the way. Well worth watching.
Good premise, poor script and directing

On paper, the number 23 sounds like a winner and if done properly, it should have been both a scary and extremely entertaining story with twists and turns everywhere to keep you guessing until the very end. In reality though it is let down by two things. Firstly the script which to say it clutches at straws would be an understatement (when he is trying to find the number 23 in everything, it gets a bit desperate) and not making the most of the it's premise, instead focusing its attention on areas best left to the imagination. It manages to turn what could have been a very good and cleverly written script into a low budget B movie. The second thing to let it down is the director who really should have gotten more out of his cast, especially Jim Carrey given that he has already proven his talent for serious roles.
It is in the scenes where the book is given visual representation that the film is at it's worst, trading serious story line for a cheesy film noiresque style of story telling. This cheapens rather than enhances the film and would have been better of being left out all together and just left as a voice over and to the audiences imagination.
Going back to the script, if you watch a film like Lucky Number Sleven you are kept entertained and guessing until the very end and you want to find out what happens to the characters, plus all the questions get answered. This film wants to follow those tracks but has the opposite effect with the final revelation a complete waste of the viewers time and efforts because of what has gone on before (by this point you won't really care).
I'm amazed that so many people have given this film a good review. The most interesting thing to do whilst watching this film is to count up all the things that add up to 23, that should keep you watching if nothing else.
