It's 2151 and the British have launched a fleet of space ships to explore the galaxy in the only way the British can... with a stiff upper lip and regular tea breaks. Their mission? To export all things British to all corners of the galaxy - namely overpriced supermarkets, housing estates, call centres and even tractors - and protect Britain's interest in a changing galaxy.
At the forefront of this expeditionary force is the HMS Camden Lock, helmed by the irrepressible, if a little tetchy, Commander Henderson (Nick Frost). Ably assisted by a crew of misfits, the Commander steers his ship through the stars, giving orders from his big swivelly chair.
Henderson is often more

Regardless of the Previous breakdown of sets, costumes, actors and special effects given, HYPERDRIVE is a value for money couple of series with some cool ideas and genuinely funny moments, the point about this series is that it does take the mickey out of all science fiction genre's to date, and also that it doesnt have the biggest budget around is what makes it. BUT!! If you are the type of person who writes in to Gene Rodenberry's estate about episode 23 series four of DS9 and how sisko was wearing the wrong insignia for 2 seconds of the episode, then this series will probably not be for you :D
Loved this since the line about their mission being to find planning permission for tesco on other planets. Other magic moments: the posh dinner of wotsits - who wouldn't be impressed; the chosen one prank; the sex room and the holodeck walk (with real dog poo).
This is exactly how star trek would be if the UK created it instead of US.
I would recommend this to anyone who enjoyed red dwarf.
I grew-up on Red Dwarf and spaced also and have and have been holding out for another series on Red Dwarf for years, when Hyperdrive came to our screen I didn't think it could compare to Red Dwarf... I was wrong! I loved Red Dwarf and have watched it to death and Hyperdrive have made laugh just as much... u have to be observant to find humour in the show joke aren't made obvious all the time and if you have the inteligence in you then you will see that the humour... well worth making another series... but I said the same about spaced and it never happened.
The first series of Hyperdrive didn't quite work. It was worth a watch, but the characters weren't quite happening, and the scripts weren't quite up to snuff.
But this series has come of age - big time - with the second series. Characters are nicely fleshed out now and the comedic chemistry is perfect.
The scripts are now very, very clever, some of the ideas absolutely inspired and the performances stellar. Check out the commander and York morphing into a roofer called Phil and Dave from Our Price in Vine's 1995-based dream - a side-splitting moment of sheer comedy genius.
Probably the best BBC sitcom for 20 years. Literally brilliant.
Wish I could award it a sixth star.
Stop comparing this show to Red Dwarf! They're very different. Red Dwarf is more adult and chaotic. Hyperdrive is more conventionally funny, but it's still FUNNY! If we compare all sci-fi spoofs we could just as well bring up Futurama? The relationships between York and Henderson, and Henderson and Teal, are highly amusing. Well worth the money
