Strapped for cash after her recent graduation from New York University, Annie Braddock (Scarlett Johansson) puts an ad in the newspaper, hoping to find a position as a nanny. Thankfully, a chance encounter quickly leads to potential employment with Mr. X (Paul Giamatti) and Mrs. X (Laura Linney), a wealthy Upper East Side couple looking for someone to care for their 4-year-old son, Grayer (Nicholas Art).
Annie is a product of a working-class New Jersey family, where her mother (Donna Murphy) has dreams of her daughter becoming a respectable businesswoman. Meanwhile, Annie has her sights set on a career in anthropology. Suddenly, the prospect of working for some of the city's social elite seems like a nice alternative.
Annie has done some babysitting in the past, but she has no idea what she is getting herself into when she accepts the position. Mrs. X turns out to be the employer from hell - a pampered wife, whose increasingly outrageous demands take a considerable toll on Annie. Even worse, Mr. X is never around and Annie is basically caught right in the middle of the couple's crumbling marriage. For the next nine frenzied months, Annie is forced to juggle between the pair, their dysfunctions, their son, and a new love interest (Chris Evans).

I loved this film it was excellent. Before I watched it I honestly didn't expect it to be that good but by the end my attitude had definetly changed. I thought it was brilliant, it had some very funny moments as well as some sad scenes. The film is based on a book which is fictional but also based on true fact, so remember when you watch this film that the storyline is actually got quite a bit of fact to it. So if you think it doesn't look that good, I recommend you to still watch it as it really is a fab film! Enjoy!
this is one of these movies that fall into a place where movies are cute but not classic, its a warm cute story with a very solid performance for scarlett johansson while Laura Linney plays a similiar role to merly streaps superficial wealthy character in devil wears prada , Paul Giamatti is pretty average and under used .but to me this movie tries to address more heavy social issues in a very light mannered unconvincing way and in this it loses its way,it could have been either more feelgood or more drama in a way in kinda just stayed middle of the road ,and with such a strong cast (also chris evens and alica keys) giving better direction this movie had the potential to have been so much more .still worth a watch three stars might be a bit harsh but for me its just short of four stars
