The year is 2089. An alien race stalks the land in towering machines known as Tripods. They have taken over the earth and enslaved mankind with a mind-controlling device, ceremoniously implanted at the age of fourteen. Will Parker anxiously awaits this ritual but hears of a place where a group of people is organising a resistance movement. Together with his cousin they leave their village, hoping to join them. They have not left unnoticed however, and the giant alien machines are in pursuit.

Based on the novels by John Christopher, The Tripods was one of the most expensive productions ever undertaken by the BBC, using a huge cast and many new special effects. Originally aired in the Saturday afternoon slot previously occupied by Doctor Who, The Tripods is another classic sci-fi serial from the BBC.

Includes the whole of series 1 and 2.

It's hard not to think of Doctor Who when you hear the words BBC and Sci Fi.
The Tripods is a reminder of some classic sci fi that many people have forgoton about..

Whats's realy nice is that it's presented in it's origonal form. No HD so new CGI or 5.1 but thats how it was meant to be !!

It's just a shame series 3 was never made but the inclosed booklet gives an insight into what what might have happened.

 A Terrific Two Part Trilogy!

In this story, society has returned to a neo-medieval stage after a war that destroyed civilization. The world is now run by aliens who control all adults by brain implants called caps. They move around in large 3-legged machines. Three youths, about to be be capped, set off to find a fabled colony of uncapped adults in 'the white mountain' in order to retain their freedom. The script, direction and acting were all marvelous. The third and final season was cancelled by the bbc. This could have been one of the truly great classics in adventure film had it been completed. It has some truly excellent cliff hanger moments, even if some of series one takes a meandering route. Recommended viewing!!!

 Good but unfinished

Typical! Release Season 1 and then the whole thing as a double pack! Anyway, this was a victim of the BBC's anti Sci-Fi campaign by the Controller of BBC at the time (an event that also included Doctor WHo) so only the first two books were filmed. The Tripods were brilliantly done, even if the acting was a bit suspect!

three times as bad as i remember.

yet another attempt by the beeb to put on tv some different but not classic sf.john christopher was an ok writer but his books suffered from what always seemed to be a "written for children" syndrome.the whole series of this show only enforces the beebs ineptitude when writing and using special/visual effects on a small budget ( see also blakes 7 ).the whole run of this saga was just boring, nonsensical and uninteresting.the tripods were just silly bearing in mind anything with 3 legs will go round in a circle it also had no weaponary or armaments.why nobody didnt just trip them up i dont know.bbc tv at its worst.
