Personally, I think this does for Matthew McConaughey what Pulp Fiction did for Travolta. Remember when Travolta was lost in Look Who's Talking Hell? Well Matthew McConaughey's been sleepwalking through Romcoms for years. He was great in Dazed and Confused... Remember that?

Well, in Killer Joe he plays a great character, a twisted contract killer with own weird sense of moral purpose. Hired by a couple of dim rednecks to off a family member for the insurance pay out, he waives his usual payment upfront rule and agrees a deal with the drug dealer who hires him. He'll take the dealers trailer park ingenue sister as a retainer instead until the cash comes through.

In a cinematic landscape of bland, safe big screen entertainment, this is the kind of underbelly darkness that really bites. Blackly comic, expertly played and building to a shocking climax, Killer Joe is a must see movie.

Very good movie in the Cohen Brothers style, kept me glued to the seat throughout. I like the interesting use of the fried chicken leg! Very novel. Excellent ending but somewhat frustrating! Blackest of black comedy. Top marks.

 A Killer Movie!

The thing that initially drew me to Killer Joe was the director of the film. As a fan of William Freidkin's work (best known for The Exorcist) I was eager to see what his latest movie would be like, and I was anything but disapointed. Killer Joe is a terrific film and possibly one of the best movies I've seen all year. With an incredible cast (Matthew McConaughey steals the show with the best performance of his career here), Freidkin is at the peak of his powers.

The film revolves around an intriguing plot in which a hired hitman, Killer Joe, is called in to kill the family's mother, in a quick attempt to reap the cash rewards. A plot device very similar to other classics such as Hitchcock's Strangers On A Train. Things quickly turn from bad to worse for this cast of characters however!

A terrific blend of edge-of-your-seat tension and suspense merged brilliantly with some hilarious humour make this film a must see! I cannot recommend this one high enough - go and see it!

 Blackly comic trailer park thriller.

Featuring a great cast and some deliciously dark twists and turns, William Friedkin's trailer trash comedy thriller serves up enough entertainment to be worth catching.

When Chris (Emile Hirsch) finds himself out of his depth and owing money he turns to his father with a plan. To hire Killer Joe (Matthew McCaugheny) to kill his mother for the insurance money. Although Joe gets hired the plans inevitably do not go to plan, setting in motion and unravelling of events!

Not entirely for the prudish or easily offended, this is a trashy fun ride for a couple of hours with a recognizeable cast enjoying getting down and dirty. I enjoyed it more than I expected to.

Sleazy does it in this lurid tale of Texan trailer trash, director William Friedkin's second stab at directing the work of playwright Tracy Letts (Bug.) Matthew McConaughey continues his career renaissance as the title character, a smalltown sheriff and part time hit man enlisted by a debt ridden Emile Hirsch to off an unloved relative.
Juno Temple, meanwhile, is Dottie, the tween Lolita who Joe takes as collateral in a steamily claustrophobic slice of southern gothic that builds to a triumphantly unpleasant and frustratingly abrupt climax.
Just as everything is clicking into place and everyone shows their cards over a nice chicken supper the film ends.
The acting is outstanding and the script darkly funny and this gives the film an extra star, but the ending really drags it back down again. Still on a plus note it great to see Matthew McConaughey act against type and in this he is awesome. It's not the classic film that the blurb would have you belive, but if you fancy something sleazy, nasty and at times very funny give it a go.
