Review

The plot of one the early Channel Four film is sweet and simple. Boy likes girl at school, but is too embarrassed to confront her. Alan relates everything to a running cricket commentary (provided superbly by John Arlott) right up to the will he, won't he finale, when he has to kiss Ann in a school play.

I remember watching this the first time it was broadcast in the 1980s. I absolutely loved it and am delighted that it is now available on DVD. This is well worth a watch for the beautiful cinematography that captures innocence and awkwardness perfectly. Alison Steadman (as always) is fantastic as the prickly school teacher. Give it a go - you won't regret it.

What makes this play fantastic, is the narration by the late John Arlott (cricket commentator) his voice really does this play justice.
The atmoshphere of the early 1950s is well captured, when everything in England was just so lovely.
A really fantastic play, to be enjoyed by anyone who loves english films and drama.

realy liked this film the stuggle of youth and innocence, and how hard it can be to talk to the opposite sex, well worth a watch if you liked this you will love a film called the leaving of livepool, about 2 evacuee kids sent to australia during world war two, what i think is importent in both these films is the human condition of emotion and feeling two very good films
