As freezing snow blasts the mountain peaks of wartime Korea. A small platoon of army grunts are ordered to stay behind to protect a 15,000-man division as it moves out under heavy communist fire. One corporal, whom the platoon has mistakenly come to believe is a hero, is left with the responsibility of protecting the men. It's a mistake that is about to come back to haunt them.

The brilliance of Sam Fuller in making the viewer believe that they`re freezing their backside off on a cold-windswept Korean mountain, trying to stay alive, obscessing about dry socks ,trying to reach the bridge before they get wiped out.Tension abounds as a soldier desperately tries to save his wounded comrade from a minefield and Fuller`s "lean" direction always keeps the viewer on his toes.No flashbacks and no time to reminise-the enemy are attacking and you`re stuck in a trench with the rearguard.Low-budget it may be but low-quality it isn`t.Brilliant film and let`s hope we also have a dvd release of Fuller`s first Korean war pic "Steel Helmet" as well as the only British film to deal with the conflict "A Hill In Korea" starring Stanley Baker and a very young Michael Caine.
A classic War film from a forgotten war....

Samuel Fuller really gets under the skins of the trapped, scared and frightened GI's in this classic Korean War film. This is one of my favourite war films ever made, with a small cast, including Richard Basehart. The sheer scale of the film allows Fuller to explore the characters and the futility of war. Recommended and I am so glad that it is eventually coming out on R2 DVD!!
