Duets is a road-trip comedy about six individuals who throw off the binds of their pre-determined lives and strive to fulfil their dreams. They are: a waitress (Maria Bello) from West Virginia
desperate to become a recording star, an ex-con (Andre Braugher) who sings with the voice of an angel, a salesman (Paul Giamatti) who suffers a nervous breakdown while chasing the
American Dream, a seasoned Karaoke hustler (Huey Lewis) who is disconnected from everybody and everything, an innocent Vegas showgirl (Gwyneth Paltrow) searching for family and love, and a young down-on-his-luck cab driver.
As they converge on the $5,000 Grand Prize Karaoke Contest in Omaha, Nebraska, their lives intertwine, revealing the funny, raucous world of Karaoke bars and chain hotels that link interstates of America.
Featuring a superb soundtrack including the hit Cruisin' by Gwyneth Paltrow and Huey Lewis.

I discovered this movie a couple of years ago and was charmed by its fragile characters and beautiful soundtrack that seems to create character depth that the script doesn't. Huey Lewis (Ricky Dean) was, surprisingly, very strong in his role as a reluctant father to Gwyneth Paltrow's character, Liv. While I found some of the acting to be wooden, and the direction was often predictable, there was something that appealed to me - I think the characters spoke through the music rather than the narrative, consequently lifting the movie to a higher level. A mention also has to go to Braugher and Giamatti who are a delightful combination right up to the heartbreaking climax.

I suppose you have to like a bit of Kareoke to watch this but as a road movie it was ok. This is easy watching entertainment with a lot of sub plots and with strong performances throughout.
