Knox Oil and Gas of Houston is far removed from the North Sea oil it desires - and the sleepy Scottish seaside village it wants to buy and replace with a refinery. So Knox sends it ace dealmaker (Peter Riegart) to negotiate. He finds cheerful future millionaires, awesome northern lights, a lusty innkeeper, a stubborn beachcomber and a mermaid with webbed toes. And you've found Bill Forsyth's enchanting comedy Local Hero.
Forsyth's touch is perfect: whether showing us a tycoon (Burt Lancaster) with his head in the stars or bridging generations at an all-night ceilidh dance.

I bought this film, becuase I like the them to it going home, For over 18 years I have wanted to watch this film, but never could get my hands on a copy until I saw it for sale.
I founf this movie great it, showed great acting and jsut was great the way the story line went.
I always like lower budget films, since there is no unbeliveable story lines.
It makes me feel booking an holiday to Scotland to see the views

Its absolutely amazing that this movie is as obscure as it is. That this movie is not considered one of the best of the 80s by the masses is nothing short of scandalous. But for us few who've seen it & those of you reading this review, we know. The contrast beween city life & country life & its immense impact on one individual has in my opinion never been bettered. This film also contains one of the finest endings you'll ever have the pleasure of seeing

This has to be one of the best films my husband and I have seen. Praise indeed! It is funny, thought provoking and very special. You cannot compare it to any other film because it is unique. Coincidently Local Hero is on the box tonight but I really need to buy a 'proper' DVD, checked on Play, now ordered!
