Charlie Wilson's War

This isn't a review of the film, which is good as the other comments testify. However, a word of warning. If you buy this DVD it comes with some annoying little AIDS documentary at the start that can't be skipped. Might seem a minor problem, but it's just not on - no one wants to be forced to sit through several minutes of poorly written poetry every time they decide to put on a movie.

I have to agree with the reviews on here, this film covers a very touchy subject and gives you an insight into American politics. A floored but good congressman (Hanks) stumbles into a war that he didn't know that much about, upon finding out the true story dedicates his career with the help of a wealthy texas woman (Roberts) to righting the injustice, and in steps another floored but honest character (Hoffman). However a 90 minute movie on such a subject when no-one would blink if it were 2 hours doesn't do it justice. I feel if they had gone a bit further it would have been so much better.........

I was pleasantly surpirsed with Charlie Wilson's War, as it was not only interesting but entertaining and funny!

The acting was also very watchable, especially Phillip Seymour Hoffman who was both convincing and hilarious. For a film about politics, this is surprisingly easy to watch! Don't miss!

The film is based on the true life story of Congress man/ ladies man Charlie Wilson's plight to to fund the Afgan rebels to fight the invading Russian war machine in the 80's. How the story unfolds in his efforts is very interestingand amusing. Hanks as ever is brilliant as the flawed Wilson, and Julia Roberts gives in a good support, if slightly under used role. But it's Phillip Seymour Hoffman who steals the show, as the ex C.I.A spy. The feels slightly underwhelming due to the fact as the film is only 90 minutes long, not long enough to give the propper story justice, and is interesting rather than gripping. But this film hits a bulls eye in being a good history lesson, and the final minutes of the film where after the the Russians have pulled out of Afganistan, and the U.S congress are not willing to give money to re-build the country is a stark reminder of the world we live in today.
This may be a slightly flawed film, but still deserves your attention, and deals with the subjest matter allot better than the recent LIONS FOR LAMBS.
Well worth watching!

The Movie started off really well, all the charcters were introduceed and the story was set, but the movie was to short, with Tom Hanks in a pretty good role after a while and Philip Seymour Hoffman mesmerising in every scene, they should have made the movie a little longer with a bit more meat, im sure Hanks and Seymours charcters did enuf intresting things up until 1988. Julia Roberts was average. Defo worth a watch, but cud have been much better.
