oh my god what a fab film. I love musicals but this had the X factor. I only went to see it at the pictures because my brother played the drummer at the Cavern in the film and that some of it was filmed in Liverpool and i'm only over the water from there so it's home, anyway this is a must see film it will open your eyes to the real 60's.

Great easy watching - and gets better each time. I was bought this as a present and even though I am a fan of director Julie Taymore (Frida) I thought it was going to be a disappointment, particularly as the Beatles songs weren't sung by the Beatles. The whole movie is a delight - the acting- the music and the storyline. Not only that it grows on you - so I ended up seeing it 3 times in a week. I have never had that happen before. Highly recommended - suitable for a family gathering.

Did you ever imagine what it would have been like in the 60's? Did you ever wonder what it was like to live in the 60's? Did you ever just wonder what it was like to live in America in the 60's?
Maybe because I was in my teens in the 60's that this film takes me back to what I felt it was like back then. This movie should have been given the full treatment of publicity and it would have been a smash hit. I am not a big fan of musicals, but this has a very good true to life storyline that sells it'self without the musice, the music compliments this move and makes it 100% better. All the characters have names associated with the songs of John & Paul. I think this movie was a homage to not only the 60's but to the group that made the 60's what they were, The Beatles.
No ham actors in this movies and everyone is song perfect and not a key out of place. This film lasts for more than 2 hours and is not at all over long. Some kids today don't seem to have an attention span more than 5 minutes long. Let it Be.
sheer beauty

I also only heard about this film after seeing the posters on the london underground. This film is an absolute gem. At first I did wonder what I'd let myself in for but once you get into it you never want to get out! The characters are wonderful and the story incorporates the songs of the Beatles really well. I have nothing but praise for all the wonderful actors that featured in this film especially the lovely Jim Sturgess - can't wait to see more from him. (He's equally as charming and wonderful in the film '21')
A real must see for everyone looking for a raise in spirits.

Best film of 2007

What an absolute travesty that Sony did not market this film as much as the effort Warner put into that dross "I am Legend" which was all advertising and little substance, ATU is all substance...and no advertising, sliped through their marketing hands has passed probably the Best film of 2007, and a certain cult classic which will be talked over and over again in 20 years time, Across The Universe got little or no promotion from its makers (probably due to a rumoured rift between Taymor and Sony about the final cut).
The music is what makes this film, This is the first film to be sanctioned to use the music of the beatles since "Yellow Submarine" and it has been cleverly written so that the characters (names after leading beatles song characters although not the charcters themselves) can tell a story of a transatlantic love and late 60s anti-war turbulance linking the songs to the story.
If your a beatle maniac, you may well resent the fact that the performance of the songs is by the artists and not by the original band (lamenting "not as good as the orginal"), but if your not a beatles fanatic but quite like beales music, you may be like me, of the opinion that the performances actualy bring a new meaning to the songs and if anything (beatles fans will have my head) give a new BETTER more emotional and sinceer version.
The film drifts into the wacky realms of LSD and memories being young and trying to first comprehend the ways of the powers of the world leaders against your own small part in human existance. I hope an extended version of this film follows as I could watch it over and over again, it's firmly placed in my all time top 10 list.

I first became aware of this film when I was jobhunting in London and saw the poster at Victoria underground station. It was such an amazing visual I had to find out more, and when I googled and found out it was a film told via The Beatles music (of whom I am a massive massive fan) I HAD to see it! As luck would have it that day was the LAST DAY it was showing in UK cinemas, so I dragged my boyfriend to see it, who hates musicals.
However even he who hates the singing absolutely loved it. We were both completely blown away by the great singing talent, the stunning visuals, the truly electric on screen passion between Jude and Lucy, and the beautiful love story. Being a Beatles fan I particularly enjoyed the way the songs were used in the film in less obvious ways (such as when Prudence arrives and 'Came In Through The Bathroom Window' hehe). I was also worried the quality of the music would be let down by the singers, but hell no, I actually prefer the film's version of I Want You, and this coming from someone whose listened to the Love album so many times she had to buy a second copy! I found it a definite 'waterproof mascara' film (i.e. left the cinema with watery eyes), but then I still cry at Bambi, so you might get through it without the Kleenex!
It is a crime that this film received so little publicity as it is the diamond amongst a rough year of silly slapstick, gory horror and way too many sequels. I have been checking the dvd release date almost daily and am sooooooo happy it's coming to dvd, just re-watching the trailer made my eyes water. If you don't buy it get your bum to lovefilm and rent it - you NEED to see this!
Amazing Musical Masterpiece!

What a year 2007 was for movie musicals, Dreamgirls, Hairspray, Colma, Enchated and this hidden gem.
Caught this in its limited release and was blown over by it, fantastic cast with amazing voices, great direction, breathtaking visuals and moments that really touch you. Its more of a grown up musical (as it lost my 16 year old cousin when it went through its trippy stage half way through) My friends (musical theatre fans) who also saw it loved it and it even moved one of them to tears.
I cant recomend this movie highly enough.
AMAZING!!

Quite honestly and simply the single most wonderful piece of cinematography in far too long.
Fulfils every maxim to the brim - beautiful.
You MUST watch it.
how it could be as understated as it was is a mystery and almost an outrage!
