Shut Up & Sing is a rockumentary which travels with the Dixie Chicks, from the peak of their popularity as the national-anthem-singing-darlings of country music and top-selling female recording artists of all time through to the infamous anti-Bush comment made by the group's lead singer Natalie Maines in 2003. The film follows the lives and careers of the Dixie Chicks over a period of three years during which they were under political attack and received death threats, while continuing to live their lives, have children and, of course, make music. At a time when the US is fighting for democracy and freedom of speech in other countries, the film is a poignant reminder that speaking your mind in the West isn't always appreciated.

In a concert in London Natalie Maines, lead singer of the biggest selling all-female band in the world The Dixie Chicks, quipped "Just so you know we're ashamed that the president of the United States comes from the state of Texas" and within 24 hours they found themselves in a political and PR nightmare!
I first became a fan of The Dixie Chicks back in 2003 when I heard the song "Travelin Soldier" and soon bought their album "Home" and fell in love with them but I knew nothing about them (except that they were pretty hot and did great music) so this documentary was great to see as it follows the 3 members Natalie Maines, Emily Robison & Marti Monahan lives across the 3 years between the statement made and their next album, current album - "Taking The Long Way". It's actually really cool because now I am totally in love with Natalie Maines, she's friggin' awesome! The 3 girls struglle to figure things out as radio stations refuse to play their music, people try and boycott their shows & even former "fans" smash up their CDs ala Alanis Morrisette!
This documentary is fundementally about the band and how close they are and how they are a family that banded together but this is also about free-speech, where I do believe that that free speech bell that Americans love to ring is a double edged sword Natalie Maines making a lil fun of Dubya doesnt warrant people wanting to tie the girls to a bomb on it's way to Iraq! If nothing else this documentary disturbingly portrays just how dangerous over-patriotic Americans can be.
It's a fantastic documentary that's interesting, captures your attention and slightly pissed me off getting to know more about Maines' personality and then also realising she's married, but I digress. You dont have to be a fan of The Dixie Chicks to enjoy this documentary but if you are a fan you'll enjoy the soundtrack!

 A movie about courage

Just bought this DVD and watched it this afternoon. A magnificent, candid documentary, showing what courage the Chicks had in the face of xenophobic stupidity. What these women, and especially Natalie Maines, had to put up with, simply for saying what lots of their fellow countrymen and women thought, is something that America should be ashamed of.
Land of the free? Yeah right, as long as you toe the line and never say what you think.
Buy it, watch it and then say a prayer of thanks that the world has people like the Dixie Chicks in it - people who have the guts to say what they feel and never be intimidated by fascists dresssing themselves in the flag of patriotism.

 Brilliant,A MUST BUY.

A must for all dixie fans,i was glued to the tv for 1 hour and 40 mins, the story tells a tale of what free speech really means in the usa if you dare call to account "patriotisim"and shows just how powerfull country radio is.A heartbreaking story in which nobody in the usa comes out with any credit....EXCEPT THE DIXIE CHICKS.

 Dixie Chicks - Yes!

This DVD is so powerful and shows how the Dixie Chicks stood up and said what they thought. Natalie's comments about George W Bush didn't go down well in America but that didn't stop them from winning awards for their comeback album and this documentary DVD also shows how they had the guts to stick by their original comment. This is the best music DVD I've ever seen. Buy it now and support the Dixie Chicks.

This is a documentary film that really rips at the heartstrings. It is a very sad reflection on the US culture when someone can make a comment in the heat of the moment and can be objectified for that opinion. This film is a real attempt to show how your whole can be turned upside down just for your opinion. I have been lucky enough to see the Chicks live twice including at Shepherd's Bush featured at the end of this film and they really do rock. Good on 'em for not backing down and not making nice. It's a truly amazing film which everyone should see. CHICKS RULE!!!!
