In the aftermath of World War II bombing, two orphaned children struggle to survive in the Japanese countryside. To Seita and his four-year old sister, the helplessness and indifference of their countrymen is even more painful than the enemy raids. Through desperation, hunger and grief, these children's lives are as heartbreakingly fragile as their spirit and love is inspiring.

'Grave Of The Fireflies' is a tale of the true tragedy of war and innocence lost, not only of the abandoned young, but of an entire nation. Isao Takahata's rightly revered and thought-provoking anime was winner of a special award at the 1989 Blue Ribbon awards and the Adult's Jury award at the 1994 Chicago International Children's Film Festival.

 Amazing

One of my favourite studio ghibli films (out of the ones ive seen) "Grave of the fireflies" is very different to the magical fantasy themes of many other of the films.

This film, set in world war II japan is an emotional journey through the lives of the main characters and a far cry from the playfulness of films like "spirited away", although equally as spectacular.

Its a fantastic, tragic drama from the great Studio Ghibli, a must buy for any fan.

 Stunning, evocative film

This film is pure brilliance - anime is not all about action and violence - and this film shows the real, emotional and heart rending capacity that humans can inflict and suffer. If you want guts and glory watch something Hollywood, but if you want something that will make you think, this is the one

 The saddest film ever made

A stunning film for many reasons. It graphically and angrily depicts lives devastated by war. It shows the Japanese to not just be a simple-minded race of suicidal warriors, but everyday people from any walk of life. And it chronicles a tragic and overwhelmingly sad story of a boy and his noble but foolish and futile efforts to provide for himself and his sister. Believable characters, beautiful animation and heart-rending music, this detailed and eloquent film is undoubtedly saddening and unsettling but it is bravely human and it is passionately pacifist, something rarely communicated convincingly in an anti-war film

 Greatest (Anti) War film ever

An incredibly moving movie set in Japan at the end of WW2, following the struggle for survival of a teenage boy and his younger sister. This is a beautiful film that has made every girl I've watched it with cry, and brings me close to tears as well. Incredibly realistic and very different from any other Ghibli movie that I've seen.

This film is a studio ghibli masterpiece, moving away from their traditional fantasy based films Grave Of The Fireflies is a deep and very moving film.

Amazing drama set in Japan during world war II. This is a very well made film with well developed characters.

A must have for Anime and Drama fans Alike
